Pro-Fitness IS NO MORE

Ha, got this email this morning as well from Cityfitness, was just about to start a topic about it.

I find it kind of ironic, as I used to be a member with Johnsonville Cityfitness for 4-5 years (previously Solutions on a non-fixed contract) before I moved to Auckland.

When I came back to Wellington early this year I wanted to get away from Cityfitness due to not being entirely happy with how they handled my membership ending, and I also thought the facilities at Bodyworks were far better.

IMHO Cityfitness - in Johnsonville at least - is a more cardio-focused gym. They aren't awful if you're strength-focused, but I found that their plates in particular were woeful (they have about 4 different types, so many varying sizes of 20kg plates!) and a lot of the bars were bent when I was last there :-s

I hope it doesn't change the structure of Bodyworks too much...

edit - here's the email:

I'm hoping that I can now get one of their passport memberships, as I'm currently spending $15 per visit for a 10 trip to J'ville CF every now and then as I can't be arsed commuting to town to go to the gym on the weekend at Bodyworks - this could be a great thing from my perspective. J'ville CF isn't as good a gym IMO (crappy equipment) - but good enough for a weekend extra visit. Am quietly excited.

Ha I'm exactly the same Chillicat, I live in Jville so on the odd occasion I feel like going to the gym, but can't be arsed going into town for it I wouldn't mind going to Cfit (and had a 10 trip as well earlier this year)

From what I've heard (this is 2nd hand info), the Jville Cfit members could use the Porirua gym - so I assume now that it's all under one umbrella, the Bodyworks members could be offered the same sort of thing?

On top of the convenience, it's where my Rugby team works out so would come in handy if I was after a training partner

If you hear anything more about it let me know :)

edit - Saw this on the Cityfitness site re: info for Bodyworks/Profitness members:

You will also be part of a nationwide group with the opportunity to make use of the cityfitness facilities whenever you are travelling throughout New Zealand.

This kind of implies you can travel between clubs? I may ask when I'm in Bodyworks if that is the case.

Johnsonville's the same.... most, if not all (it's been a while) of the free weights were down in the man-cave below ground level. Not a great range of stuff, but enough, off peak anyway.

The upstairs (group fitness classes, cardio and weight-stack machines) was quite light and airy - and you could do the group fitness without everyone upstairs watching, which is more than you could say about Bodyworks Thorndon!

Ah sweet, question answered:

If I have a bodyworks wellington or porirua membership can i use the cityfitness gyms in johnsonville or porirua?

Yes, as part of the acquisition, all bodyworks members have been upgraded to a cityfitness passport membership which means that a bodyworks member has access to all cityfitness gyms for the duration of their current membership.

Awesome!

Yeah, off peak is the key for weights. As I said above though, their plates are woeful hand-me-down types

Sounds good. Wonder what that means for those of us whose term of membership is up and are now just on a non-contract? My 3 years were up in Sept and I presumably now no longer have a contract and just have an ongoing membership. I'll have to ask this evening.

I've still got 2 clicks on my J'ville card too!

They say:

Your current membership will be transferred to cityfitness and you will keep your same billing frequency, membership term and rate

So I'd assume you'd continue on as normal? Gutted on the 2 trips left though, I wonder if they'll re-imburse you somehow?

But geez, they work fast! Just got back from a session and most things have been rebranded/stickered over with Cfitness stuff. Even had to hand in my old Bodyworks card to get a Cityfitness tag (forgot to grab it on my way out though dammit, will grab it tomorrow).

Ominous start to the Cityfitness takeover though - fire alarm went off RIGHT when I had just finished warming up for the heavy deadlifts  Just my luck! Funny that it should happen on the first day of the changeover I thought! :-s

The staff were so frazzled they never even offered me the new tag... I get the feeling they were the last ones being thought about....

Hope it wasn't raining too hard during the fire alarm!

Oh really? Maybe the backlog to set up the new passes is too big now? :pfft: I saw a big list/pile of them on my way out, but they seemed too busy to deal with me asking where mine is so I thought I'd leave it for now.

I do wonder what the staff gain/lose out of this though? The Bodyworks staff are a great bunch, would be crap if this means any of them are out of jobs :?

I also think this is a bit odd that they spring it on us the day it happens. I mean, in the end we've come out alright (getting to use more facilities if we need to) but some forewarning would've been standard I would think...?

As for the fire alarm - it was actually quite nice as a cool off! Pity I really didn't need it due to just having warmed up for deadlifts... but ah well.

I heard the changeover in Wgtn left most existing staff without jobs?

That sucks to hear, I'd guess this would be moreso at Porirua Bodyworks (which is closing) rather than Thorndon? I hope they can spread some jobs out amongst Jville Cfit/Porirua Cfit/Thorndon Bodyworks for them...

I had a leg session at palmy north City Fitness over last christmas, was a great gym I thought, yes plenty of cardio when you walk in, but plenty of Nautilus nitro machines and then a great freeweight area too.

Plus a couch within crawling distance of the leg area!

Highly recommend if your in Palmy to try them out, ridiculous such a small town had such a good gym.

Don't know about Wellington, but the word I heard was that the Porirua staff weren't kept on after whatever they did to the two sites out there.

Most of the Thorndon PTs were working away when I was there this morning.

I agree with Drizzt that they've not handled telling the membership very well at all... they haven't even put anything on the Bodyworks website.

Damn I had a look through Palmy & trained in the New Plymouth gym - henceforth the chain dubbed Shitty Fitness! Weights were crap in both, lots of machines & cardio (fitness centre so figures), weird oly bars with hexagonal profiles????? No doubt if you like Shinylands this is the place for you.

Reading your comments surprised me Mike, I guess it highlights that every gym caters for someone, and that what one person considers rubbish suits another member to a tee.

Monday morning Chris walks into Bodyworks Porirua tells all the staff they are fired only 2 sales staff kept there jobs transfered to PCF. Staff had to tell a lot of the members that PTown was closing a few tears were shed equipment moved out that morning.

Got to love how shiny land works with their loyalty
