AAS Users- Warning! Med Ins Claims may be excluded

Just a bit of advice for those with Medical Insurance. I have had surgical cover for some years with Sovereign. Recently, I was diagnosed with a condition that requires surgery. I applied to Sovereign to be covered privately but because of the nature of the problem, my Doc kindly forwarded the results of my recent hormone tests with my referral letter to the Urologist. Subsequently, I had to advise this to the Ins co. As expected my Medical Insurance has "Excluded" me from cover on the basis of -

"The life assured deliberately taking or using non-prescription drugs, other than the proper therapeutic or medical purpose and in accordance with the manufacturer's directions for use or the deliberate misuse by the life assured of prescribed drugs"

They have told me that they are still talking to their Medical Ethics Committee, but of course they have the upper hand. I have told them that it is pointless me carrying on with this cover as they are not going to cover any further work on me. I guess it will save me $211 per month. I could appeal their decission but f*ck - I don't really care anymore. At least now, it has set me free. Yahoooo!!

I am getting the surgery done on Fri in the Public Hospital. Its just something I would like other users to be aware of if they have private medical insurance. If any mention of your gear usage is contained in your medical records, it gives them grounds to exempt you on any claim.

It sure ain't the US but its not much better.

had a similar incident a couple of years ago... I got declined a policy after posting a high red blood cell count during the physical. Symptoms suggested polycythemia and because my BMI was in the severely obese I was high risk. didn't take my b/fat% into effect ... yank insurer

So I went to see a Dr at the millenium (had worked along side the all blacks over the years) and managed to get it over turned due to being "dehydrated" as a result of intese training the day before. :)

No questions asked.

Is the surgery in any way related to your steroid use?

Good point, there is a section in one of the Insurance Law Reform Acts that sets out that even if a particular term of the policy was breached if it didn't contribute to the risk/loss then the insurance company can't rely on it to deny a claim. Theres a bit more to it but it seems that you have moved on and aren't really concerned about cover? Could provide further info to anyone interested.

In some Medical Professionals opinions it might be seen to be related Pseudo. I have got Prostate Cancer (Grade 8 Gleason) & will be having a Radical Prostatectomy tomorrow. Did not want to make too much of an issue on here but I guess it is something in all males minds especially those that use gear. There is little or no scientific evidence to suggest that the use of exogenous testosterone can cause prostate cancer, however prostate cancer cells cannot mutate as readily in the absence of testosterone. So often the treatment is hormonal. High levels of estrogen is also thought to be a contributing factor.

For insurance companies to still be using BMI as a reference is complete bullshit.

Bro, In no way does gear cause cancer, look at all the ppl with prostate cancer...Are they on gear too? f*ck you can get cancer from sitting under a bloody light bulb, I would not be wurried about it.

Lets be honest BMI applys to 99% of the population.

see im not sure about that, im about average weight and size and im still classed as obese :?

an less then 1% of population are bodybuilders. BMI donsn't cater to people with significant muscel mass. obviously...

It's not just bodybuilders that the "BMI doesn’t cater to" it also does not include bone density which can drastically vary to each individual. Maybe it would be more correct to imply that BMI measurements are still applied for 99% of businesses’ in healthcare or insurance
