Hey guys. i was just wondering how much protein is enough and how much is too much?? everyday after my workout i make a smoothie with 2 eggs, milk, 2 scoops of protein powder(18-19g), one small yougurt and flavour. is That enough. i'm only trying to put on a bit of size and im only 14...??? :?

for just after a work out thats plenty of protein.

as for the rest of the day 150 grams of protein a day would be a good start and any extra a bonus.spread that out over each meal.

Too much protein can stuff up your kidney if your body is not using up the protein for energy or building tissue. Flushing out the wasted protein puts all of stress on the kidney. Train hard and keep water intake high 3L - 4L per day and you should be okay.

do you have any proof to back up this claim or is this just the first thing that poped ito your head.

The thing to watch with the little RTDs is the amount of carbs and sugars in them, altho as a "right after weight training" drink, they can be helpful.

The protein per day thing is recommended 1g per pound or 2.2g per kilo for a normal person. If you are doing heavy training then obviously you need more.

I work on about 250-300+ per day

Who recommends that Ordy? Horley's or Fonterra maybe!

Dietitians & most qualified nutritionist recommendations are around 1.2 - 1.7g / kg, some going as high as 2g / kg. As per my earlier post though, more than the recommendation won't kill you (unless kidney damage already exists), it'll just add cost to your grocery bill! Carbs are cheaper than buying protein to convert to glycogen.

In reality I'd probably be having 2.2-2.5g / kg currently, which is way down from the 2.5-3g / kg I used to have. My progress is better now than ever so I wouldn't waste my money adding more.

Personally I'd say go for 2g/kg to begin with, (for many this will add significant $$ to weekly budget), but is more than enough to grow on.

By the way newbies, I hope your friends and families enjoy the protein farts you'll be given off until your GI tract adapts to its new diet!

Its from what I've read over quite a few places, not here. 2g per kg for me is only 170g of protein which is hardly anything :/

I've had the opposite, im eating more protein now and getting faster/better results, everyones different i suppose.

I just have a little bit at a time over the day, which means im nearly always eating / drinking.

i couldnt agree with you more. lucas theres nothing stopping you going over 2g per kg but you probably won't gain much more. After all, you're body can only take in so much protein! the rest gets "removed" in the toilet :pfft:

personally i think the whole protein thing is a bit hyped up, i mean sure you should eat more protein when going to the gym but it's just been exaggerated by the media, and companies such as Horleys and Fonterra. i'm sure many people on this site will disagree with me, but that's my opinion
