how long do you spend at the gym?

just wondering how long people spend at the gym .. i usually spend between 1hr30 and 2 hrs, but some of my trainers tell me that i should spend 1 hr max because after about an hour your body stops producing testosterone and starts producing a substance that actually eats away at the muscle.. other trainers say you can spend as long as you want.. what do you reckon?

I'm pretty sure the study done measuring cortisol after 45mins of training was done back in the day done with average joe's who eat average joe food. A seasoned lifter who eats enough food I.e lots of protein and carbs/fat every few hours should be able to train harder and longer without going into a catabolic state. Especially so if you take a pre workout supplement which contains aminoacids.

If you happen to be an enhanced lifter then it's even more of a moot point.

It's individual, as one persons testosterone level differs to the next, so does their bodies response to stress. So don't ask anyone else how long they think you should train, only you know how long you should train.

I mean if you're having a mean workout, feel good and are cranking are you going to go "Oh shit 45mins is up time to go" Or are you going to push yourself.

Very rarely do I take longer than an hour for weights, but that's mostly because if it's not done by then, it's not gonna help anything. Unless you're just rocking some crazy volume (or chatting the whole time), an hour to 90 minutes is plenty of time. I don't think I've had a weight session last longer than an hour for quite awhile, though.

The hormonal explanation is not really valid as far as I'm concerned. Yes there is a decline in testosterone and a slight increase in cortisol, but that has very little impact on what actually happens as far as recovery. It's more a symptom of the fact your body has undergone a stress than it is anything that will affect your results.

It's all about intensity. I see guys at the gym and I can see why they are there for 1.5 to 2 hours. Cos they fark around talking, walking around etc..

I have done 3 sets and see others still setting up. Get in there & slay it!

Yes thats it - i spend 2 hours in the gym because I sit around yapping for an hour and half.

Come train with me - I'll show you intensity.

It would be more beneficial to have 2x 1 hour workouts than 1x 2 hour workout per day imo.

What intense workout are you doing that it takes you 2 hours to complete?

This is aimed at the people who do weights for all that time, 1 hour of weights and 1 hour of cardio making up a 2 hour session is pretty common.

1-2 hours, sometimes 3 hours, dependant on body part being trained

Off-season

1 hour weights

20mins cardio hilt

comp time

45mins cardio in morn

1 hour weights at night

Abs - alternate days

45mins cardio aftern weights

Also add time in for socialising/perving/steam room session during sets/after training, the reason why I've taken a leave of absence at my current gym for the time being and am undercover at another gym :pfft:

Check my log if you want to see why its takes so long.

I do each rep slowly most the time, have a good 1-1.5 minute rest between sets so i can get the most out of each one. If i rush into the next one too fast i cant do it properly. Only do cardio about once a fortnight.

Yeah fairplay, still think a 2 hour weight session is abit overkill. What gym you at in TGA?
