i cannot remember the numbers but alcohol has a pretty high energy content, i think its around 29kj per gram (or ml whatever) - not sure exactly on the numbers but its higher than carbs and protein but not as high as fat. So every sip you take is going straight to the thighs and everything else will go :toilet:

Sometimes those bottles trick you with labels that say things like "No added sugar"

Sure they havent added any "extra" sugar to the drink but it was probably full of it to begin with.

As stated above HFCS is another one to look out for on "diet" drinks.

Yer lesson well learnt. No free meal for me today!

We all have to learn somehow hey and well I'm just glad I have the knowledge now..better late then never!

Alcohol has 7 kcals per gram and is metabolized similar to CHO by your body.

In moderation it won't derail your diet more than anything else. If you're accounting for your daily calorie intake, and you can slot in a few drinks it won't hurt anything.

Yeah don't get too hung up on having a few drinks. I mention the word "few". One or two now & then is not gonna derail you. If you like to have a drink then have one. I have one or two low carb beers now & then, And when I feel like hitting the top shelf, I go for soda water, vodka & a little lime or lemon.

Thanks for that,It's nice to know although I could have made a better choice (like not had any LOL) that the three drinks I had wont derail me I was a bit down after all my hard effort,I have been trying soo hard  So all sorted now and back into it.Thanks. :)

7 cals yes BUT metabolised like CHO NO! Alcohol is considered a 'hollow nutrient' as it is not metabolised as efficiently, cals in it are of little value and may actually interfer with uptake and metabolism of other nutrients....

Not being metabolized efficiently is a good thing for a dieter, though. Burning extra calories is the whole point. ;)

Calories being of little value - which I'm guessing you mean to say they don't carry useful nutrients - isn't really relevant if you're tracking your daily intake and getting enough of the required nutrients.

Yeah you can't go out and get three sheets to the wind on a regular basis, because the problems will add up, but having a few drinks say once a week isn't gonna ruin anybody's diet.

It comes back to the "moderation" word.

I think you have totally missed the point, they dont burn extra calories (or whatever you mean by that?)

You said alcohol wasn't metabolized efficiently.

Inefficient metabolization effectively means that it requires more energy to burn up, and that's pure calorie-wastage. It's the thermal effect of feeding, the same reason that eating protein burns more calories than fat or CHO - it requires more energy to digest it.

AND the calories they put on arent taken off at the same rate as ordinary CHO.

Not sure what you mean here.

You're a dick - so lets drink more alcohol than we can consume calories from food and see if we lose weight.....

You dont know what the hell you're talking about - the calories from alcohol are put on and NOT burnt off at the same rate as normal CHO calories, the alcohol calories impair the breakdown and release of energy from other calories ingested as food.

I'm not sure why you're getting upset. I've said "moderation" from the outset; there's no denying that drinking too much will cause problems.

Calories are calories. If at the end of the day you've eaten less than you've burned up, drinks included, and have gotten the remainder of your required nutrient intake, there's nothing magical about a few drinks that's going to sabotage fat loss.

I just found it curious that you'd point out metabolic inefficiency as a problem, when TEF is one of the big reasons that high protein intake is desirable. Calorie wastage is calorie wastage.

Have to agree with PMan here, the calories from alcohol alone are neglible when only a few drinks are consumed as alcohol has higher thermogenic effect than carbs or fats. 300 calories from 3 standard drinks before TEF.

If your trying to gain, testosterone and protein synthesis are impaired, if your trying to lose, alcohol takes metabolic priority and will halt your fat loss, how much is debateable but IMO hardly anything. There was a article on t-nation that came to the conclusion that mild drinking posed little threat due to increased thermogenesis for a long time after consumption I believe.
