Compression wear

I'm prepared to look ridiculous (like I thought other guys did) if they'll help.

Definitely shorts over the top.

It was so damn hot on Friday night, I must confess to doing the same for cardio. Still, at the end of the day you'll only get a look from someone who doesn't know they are not simply tights :pfft:

I agree mate, damn hot training here in the bay.....I guess in my arrogance I dont really give a damn what people think when I train leg wearing knee length skins and no shorts, I just care about the training and block everything and everyone out I guess..

i dont give a shit what people think, but I wear 3/4 skins during squats/leg day, as I like the freedom and flexibility..I use to wear shorts and tracks but they just cling went I get down to a certain point and it interrupts my rhythm and flow with the constant reps i try to get out...

So do you wear skins instead of shorts? Or do you wear shorts over the top? (Having worn a Spiderman costume last Halloween, I have first-hand experience of just how revealing this sort of clothing can be! :P)

And isn't it too hot? During summer, it's bad enough doing squats in shorts and singlet, let alone tights.

Yup..just wear the skins...took me 8 weeks to train and adjust through this heat here in Hawkes Bay...now Im just use to it..I guess it all comes down to training through these things that hinder you...

I have two pair, one I wear doing cardio (the older pair as they are loser on my huge calves :pfft: and they keep the quads and hammy's tight and the other pair are newer so more compression and I use them for recovery. I sleep in them and also wearing them during the day several days after my leg train.

A good example of how they work for me is this. I have long legs and when I compete I can often get cramps from the dehydration in my calves (furtherest from the heart and all) and I often have to hobble back stage after the round. If I do cramp, I put the skins on and the cramp goes almost instantaneously.

Thanks Greg - some good info for me. I have cramping issues too but more my feet - right in the arche. (not that I'm going to compete again any time soon :pfft: ) - do you notice a drop in DOMs after sleeping in them?

I like to run also - which can be seen by some as a negative in bbing - but to be honest I don't believe running causes that much more trauma - ... compression should reduce the stress during running so it may be an added bonus for me. It's more the DOMs factor - not sure why its affecting me soo much now either. I used to be able to do 3 days full body / one rest day and then repeat the 3 days no problem.

Hey Optimass

I believe they do help the DOM's for sure (on me at least). You know that stiffness you get when you sit down for a bit and go to get up? That is lessened for sure by wearing them under pants during the day. They are meant to improve circulation and certainly with the running, they are meant to align the muscle ready for the next stride.

It all could be hype if it wasn't for my own personal experience with them, but here are some links you might find useful for your aspect.

but the placebo comes in from the fact that, how much compression are you actually getting from these??

i know my dry suit (wet suit) compresses my body ALOT more than skins. perhaps i should wear that to the gym?

it is science, your right, but i dont think these provide THAT much compression really do they??

if you were to put it on your chest would you strugle to breathe? thats compression.

i agree they work, but to what extent. $200 for leggings worth??

food for thaught.

id just grab a cheap knock off brand.

probably provides the exact same amount of compression and at quarter the price.

be careful of purchasing a logo.

You have to have the right ammount of compression, otherwise your blood doesnt flow properly. Thats why wearing your wetsuit wont work. Apart from making you look like a complete tool of course. :pfft:

Check out skins.net if you want to see studies on them.

Doms almost goes away completely if you wear them after a workout.

when I train leg wearing knee length skins and no shorts,

Im guessing the lunch box is packed pretty tight?! :pfft: Check out the new skins, the A400 range. They have a bit more room in the crotch area for those of us not suffering from shrinkage.

I've had skins for a while, but never thought of using them for recovery (only ever used them when playing Rugby or occasionally for working out)

That is, until I read this thread. Had some back DOMS last week, so slept in a Skins shirt... and it helped a heck of a lot  I'm a believer!

Thats awesome, can't say they are very "romantic" though! :pfft: :pfft:

They arent designed for contact sports so if you rip them playing rugby dont bring them back to me asking for a refund!

I saw some recently for sale at the warehouse - obviously skins 'take-off' but they would be cheaper. Has anyone tried them?

I'd like to try some skins too - I already wear calf compression (just tubing bandages) on occasion to relieve cramps and it also relieves refered pain I get from my bad hip.

Those ones that are just a stretchy tube thing from the chemist.

They work really well and I sleep in them but always wake up and Ive taken them off in my sleep :-s

Havent tried the wharehouse ones, but I picked up a pair of CCC knee length legs and the t-shirt from their outlet store a couple weeks ago, $40 each I think.

They're a season or two old but, sleeping in them for recovery hugly reduces DOMS in the morning.

Hmm may have to invest in some of this stretchy tube

i don't know about you guys but I don't mind DOMS... in fact when I don't get it I feel like I haven't worked hard enough at the gym. give me a sense of satisfaction, weird as it may be! :D

Happy with everything other than legs. Well, you know ya have to get around and stuff, and while the DOM's are there, the cardio is not so enjoyable for me!

Heres a thread on this from a while back on Powerhouse:

http://www.powerhousegym.co.nz/gymforum ... 1#pid22323

I have used Nike Skins & Canterbury compression garments and reckon they're okay.

One thing I liked about the CCC tops are they come in a Warm & a Cool type. Something to do with the 'wicking' but the cool actually makes you feel cool - not much good for wearing at nights if trying to keep warm (feels colder than wearing no shirt?) but great for training in.

I use UnderArmour and i think they are great. i dont wear the bottoms much as i feel a little costophobic in them but the tops are really good. when i went to the states i wore a full seet of compression. (longs top and CPP socks) after 14hr of flying NO water retention at all in the lower legs and they where very comfortable to fly in. As a side note part of the AB's Flying Travel Atire is compression under there uniform.

Ithink for many in the gym they are a bit of a joke as they hardly train hard enough to warrent a bottle of H2O let alone $200 bucks worth of compression gear. BUT i def see the benifit if your serious about training and recovery.

I have been wearing just this week a comp Singlet while boxing and it is very comfortable to train in.

I signed up on Ebay after reading this. Then linked PayPal to my credit card. Now I have all sorts of gear coming my way. eBay FTW! Way cheap.

I will let you know the quality and functionality of the compression stuff.
