Barbell Straight Leg Deadlift or Barbell Straight-back Straight-leg Deadlift

Hi all, I was just wondering about these exercises which is better? Sort of looks like they work the hamstrings? Correct?

Or do they work different muscles altogether?

Some advice please, Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by BSBSLD, Groovy. Maybe I call it something else? ("BSBSLD" - it's a workout for your mouth!)

That said, your back should be straight in all forms of deadlift. Otherwise, you're asking for a very nasty injury.

Hi Pseudonym. its Barbell Straight-back Straight-leg Deadlift = BSBSLD.

By the way i did not make up that name...i got it from this site..

http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/ErectorSpinae/BBStraightLegDeadlift.html

and the other exercise is

http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/Hamstrings/BBStrBackStrLegDeadlift.html

And in both it looks like it working hamstrings. So i was wondering what is the difference between both of those exercises?

That's interesting... like Pseu, I'd always believed that for deads of any form you absolutely had to keep the lordotic curve in your spine (=flat back).

However, an article in the latest US edition of MuscleMag says that for the Romanian deadlift, the back stays straight, but for (what they at least call) the Stiffleg deadlift, you deliberately round lower back. See the article here.

Now, not everything these magazines publish is actually correct, but...

In terms of the difference, I use conventional deadlifts or sumo deadlifts on back day, and stifflegs (actually, according to the article, I've been doing Romanians all this time) for Hamstrings.

I understood that the reason for doing deadlifts with back was because they're such a major compound exercise, involving hams, glutes, lats, traps, quads, erectors... that doing them along with legs (squats, etc) would be overkill on the quads/hams.

On the BSLD it looks like he is just letting his back relax down at the bottom of the movement. Not something I have heard many people recommend. If you do try it, I wouldnt go too heavy. The BSBSLD he is doing it like he has a carrot in a strange place, which would be considered correct form. I find that when I squeeze my shoulder blades together and hold it through the movement, I do a movement very similar to the BSBSLD, but if I dont hold really strict form I naturally drift into the BSLD. I guess one is just a lot stricter and a bit safer than the other. I usually do the BSBKSCBLHSDL (back straight barbell knees slightly cocked but legs held stiff dead lift)
