Some familiar names there, I see Sammy Ioannidas (Aus) placed 2nd in Masters O50. 4 Aussies made top 6.

Lisa Bailey missed top 6 in physique womens, comment from her trainer was that she was seriously outmassed! Checking the pics the gals were certainly big units! Don't know what that does to MuscleNZ, BigMD & my thoughts on Juliette Bergman having the ideal physique! Iris Kyle maybe....

Standard looked pretty high throughout classes - how do the figure girls stack up against the standards judged for in NZL? They seemed very big / hard in comparison?

yeah Nate, agree that there was a little too much testoserone in the Iris Kyle look-a-likes for my taste. The Juliette Bergman look was not there in the top 6 for sure. Lisa still did remarkably well to get to that level of competition in such a short time as a physique competitor & I'm sure the experience of competing at that level will have been a great learning process in itself. I believe it is a huge committment for any female BBer to progress to that level of development. AS one of her "Team Support" crew, it would not be something that I would advocate. However, I would fully support her if that was her decission.

AS for the men, there was some excellent physiques spread across all classes. Certainly gives any Australasian Competitors something to work towards. Congrats to Sam Ioannidis (whos been around a while & still looks fantastic), & Dane Ivicevic 3rd in Juniors, & Anne-Marie Lasserre Miss Figure from over the ditch.

Yeah bro,

Full agree with you, big decision to make and I'm not sure how many woman want to make that decision to look like a decarbed Branch Warren in a bikini! (Being a little sarc' but you get my point).

A shame really as IFBB Womens Pro went that way and in retrospect most would agree it killed the sport. I think it fell apart fully with Iris Kyle, although Kim C was a bit borderline at times IMO. Here's a good link to pics of past Ms O winners http://www.bodybuildbid.com/articles/ms ... mpgal.html

Judges views change from year to year, as witnessed first hand by Carmen when her feminine but muscular look placed her in top 3, then the following year didnt even get a look in. Hopefully it goes in another direction next year?

So what are you two trying to say? They look to much like men in the face or what? I am lost

Nah,

I think most woman tend to 'square up' inthe jaw etc to some extent when they get lean enough to compete in physique (not all, but most). But some physiques look like they are starting to fit in on the mens stage (and in 99.9% of cases would be a result of heavy androgen usage). My belief (and what I think MNZ is saying) is that there is a happy medium, or balance between muscularity and feminity. This balance got heavily distorted at Pro level and the sport almost died (spectators & sponsors lost interest).

Another thought I had was whether the increasing level of muscularity in figure/fitness/shape etc (Internationally) was pushing the favoured look in womens physique towards the more extreme end?

There is no way that any of those top 6 in Southport got there without heavy androgen's usage as Nate suggests. They are getting to the extreme end of female bodybuilding & IMO that look does not really sit that well with most people either in the sport or as outsiders. The thing to consider with using male hormones in the female body, is that it is irreversible. You cannot go back to being a women & function as a female once you get to that level of use. Where as males can stop using & normally get back to some resemblance of normal testosterone production in time & can function as a male sexually during use & after providing LH can be restarted.
