Ummm I don't really know what forum to post this in but was wondering if anyone knows much about the effects of antidepressants on the body and training. I've read that they can cause weight gain? Anyone had any experience or had a "friend" who has??

Thankies

Depends on what it is, iv been on anti deps for quite a period of time(used as pain killers though)

TBH the way to get through depression is to make changes in your life. Iv been through some dark times and a lot of shit in my life so far. But all is sweet now. We all get depressed at times. Some people think if i take pills my life will be fine

Lol, me and HaNs could almost swap pain killers as we're on lots of the same stuff. As with antideppressants, some do cause weight gain but I think that's only written as a side effect because some people don't eat when they're depressed. Also you can't take fat burners with antidepressants cause they counteract their effects (some antidepressants reduces stress hormones, and thermogenics increase it)

I'm definiately not blase about taking pills. My doctor has suggested them for about 5 years now. Counselling is fucken bullshit and its getting to the point where it is affecting my job. I'm not looking for advice on depression I'm just trying to do my research on antidepressants to see if they are right for me.

I take offense to your assumptions.

Whoa, just speaking from my experiences and watching people spiral out of control. Shouldnt have assumed i spose.

They have to list side effects even in 1 in 1000 people get it, maybe look at cynical studies on the effects, thats what i look at. Paper work with my pills are more informative that my GP.

I took pretty high doses of some SSRIs and SNRIs and didn't gain weight on them... I did have a bunch of other side effects though:

-shakes

-numbness

-night sweats (literally waking up dripping and soaked)

-dry mouth

-and um... "prolonged endurance" in the bedroom department

But lots of people don't get any of these effects.

For the record, the pills didn't actually help my depression, but they can help others.

I know you're not looking for advice, but the thing that really helped me turn around was Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). If you're interested check out "Feeling Good" or "The Feel Good Handbook" by David D. Burns.

Good luck!

The side effects differ for each person.

You could gain weight, or you could completely lose your appetite.

I was on them a few years back and dropped 5kg. They didn't really do me good however, I went a bit crazy and people would think I was drunk all the time. You have to make sure you find the right pill for you. I would suggest them, especially if you've (or "your friend") had problems for 5 years. Could be a hormone imbalance and pills help with that.

I've been on many types of anti-depressents. I think it's about finding the right one for you. But i agree with the weight gain because alot of depressed people don't eat when they are in that place. My weight has fluxuated but I don't think it was anything to do with what i was taking. It's a mind set.. you eat if your hungry or bored. Not because a pill makes you. If you find the right meds for you the side affects shouldn't be that bad. Talk to your docter I guess but all drugs affect others differently.

P.s I also think counseling is B.S

Thanks guys. I guess I'll just have to try what my doctor suggests and see if there are any negative effects.

Thanks I have tried this though. Well a CBT therapist. I didn't like her so stopped going. Might read the book though you never know....

I went a bit crazy and people would think I was drunk all the time.

I'm a wee bit scared about this because there are two people at my work on them that I know of and I only just found out. But since I started working there I thought they were really strange becasue they were both overly happy and nice and bouncy all the time :-s

That's a common misperception.

GP's are general practitioners. They aren't specialists. If you present with symptoms of depression, most will advise anti-depressants. Problem solved etc.

Counselling is fucken bullshit and its getting to the point where it is affecting my job.

If you do want someone who can help PM me. Im friends with the guy now, but he helped me out of my shit(was very bad times). Spose it kinda was counselling, but at the same time it wasnt and i've seen him help a lot of other people with some serious stuff. Cost me hardly anything at the time as well.

Anti-depressents, honestly id steer clear of them, I've known a few people on them and it just numbs you / did sfa to help the problem.

In no way I am trying to bag antidepressants here but...

Did anybody else hear the interview on Newstalk ZB yesterday morning concerning antidepressants?

For those who didn't they basically said that....

- antidepressants only actually work for around 10-15% of people who take them. This is in relation to a placebo effect study.

- Exercise and a change in lifestyle are the most effective means of combating depression.

Pills for this, pills for that. They dont do shit. You end up completely dependant on them.

I was on beta blockers for my atrial fibrilliation and they fucked me over big time. I lost weight (not good as i was already a skinny bastard) and was throwing up all the time. I ditched the pills and joined a gym. Best thing I ever did

Try using your willpower. Your mind is more powerful than you think.

Normally depressed people are attracted to gloomy shit and get stuck in that vicous cycle instead of changing their routine.

And I know what Im talking about, I've been there. Im sure we all have at some point.

You DO NOT need pills.

Depression is a complex issue. It has roots in the physiological functioning of your nervous system. Which is influenced by emotions/stress from your environment. Finding out what is right for you is hard, no one can say it's easy, I'd say the only way you will find out the effects of any antidepressants will be to try them, as you have an individual biological makeup so to will you have an individual response to drugs.

Remember no doctor/specialist has the ability to see inside your brain and go "Oh here's the problem, you need a quart of serotonin, a dash of dopamine and a sprinkling of norepinephrine and you'll be just dandy." The fact is it's a hit and miss process. Not to mention these drugs take a while to kick in fully after you've started.

I've been on SSRI meds before, it didn't effect my appetite/weight but I did learn not to stop cold turkey.

How effective they will be probably depends on the cause of your depression.

If it's environmental it's like sticking a bandaid on a cut it helps but doesn't cure it.

If it's genetic then antidepressants might help a shitload because they address the physiological problem itself. These drugs aren't precision tools though. It's basically throwing a drug at the problem and hoping to see improvements.
