10x10 Squats

Draft

Recommended Posts

Ok, I did 10x10 squats last week for a bit of variation. Found it awesome so was thinking of making it a staple.

My question is: is it appropriate to be doing a 10x10 set every week or is it better to only use it now and again to shock the body?

Kthxbye

Ultimately up to you as far as what's getting you results you want.

For my purposes, I could see doing something like that as a change of pace every so often, just to get away from a heavy barbell for a few weeks (just as a light block of training, or whatever).

I doubt I'd make it a mainstay, because man, 10x10 just sucks, but your mileage may vary.

I think just variation is key, rep range doesn't really matter as long as your getting some volume in and 10x10 is a good way to do this as well as building conditioning an mental strength. One of Dave Smith's favourites was to do 10 sets of squats, starting on a weight you can just get 10 of, then do another set maybe failing at 7-8, drop the weight and do a couple of 10's until you fail again and follow this for 10 sets. He said he started of on 5 plates and on his last set he was struggling to grind out 100kgs.

I haven't had the balls to try this myself yet :P

How long did he rest between sets? Do you reckon it would be more than 45 seconds?

Yeah I think he said it took him around 45 mins to do from memory. Mammoth effort though getting to failure or close to it on 10 consecutive sets of squats.

  • 3 weeks later...

Slight thread dredge here, but I tried my first 10x10 yesterday - I thought I'd change up the routine a bit from doing the heavy squats (been in the 5-10 rep range for the past few weeks).

10x10 was probably the single most mentally challenging exercise I've done in the gym before. I picked a weight I could comfortably get 10 reps on with good form (a fair bit below parallel, would hesitate to call it ATG without a second opinion though :shifty: ), and also thought I'd make it a nice round number - which was 100kg (weighed in at 93.3 before I started).

First few sets were easy - I expected as much... but at set 4, I was having second thoughts about whether I could make the full 10 sets or not  I actually said to a PT that came for a chat about it that I had 10x10 in mind, but I'd probably only get to 7 sets... but I kept grinding. By set 6, I could only get 8 reps out, so I racked, rested for about 10seconds, and then completed the set. Same story with sets 7 and 8, until set 9 I could only get 6. At this point my form was starting to slip and concentration was waning... pushed through it, racked, rested, finished the set! Final set! I got 5 reps out (forcing myself to go below parallel), and emptied the tank after another quick rest to thrash out the final 5.

Had a good sit on the floor immediately after racking, struggled to stand up and put the weights away and couldn't walk properly afterwards. Was also drenched in sweat as if I'd just finished a HIIT session... my legs feel like they've been through a meat grinder today 8) Great workout  I'll probably look at incorporating it every now and again (whenever I'm feeling brave enough).

Awesome work man! Hope you didn't have to walk home after that one. :pale:

Gotta say though, my legs were sore for the next three or four days after that - I don't normally get sore quads but they hurt. Though that was nothing compared to my glutes and hammys...My workmates thought I was a little weird when I told them how sore my arse was...Awkward.

Cheers :)

Haha nice, I followed it up immediately with 3 sets of Hacks on a fairly light-ish weight, so my quads are pretty well demolished. But yeah the Glutes are in a bit of pain too, took a bit of explaining as to why I was walking with stiff legs around the office... :pfft:

I was just telling my mate about this couple days ago.

so this Tuesday for the first time ever.....i thought i would give the 10x10 a try.....didnt have the balls to do it till now.....

As ive been in gym only few months...so taking baby steps...

Here's what i did......all ATG...squats

10 x 40kgs warm up..

10 x 60kgs

10 x 60kgs

10 x 60kgs

10 x 60kgs

10 x 60kgs

couldnt feel my legs anymore....my right hand got numb......

so took a cup of Harden da Fk up....and went for it..

8 x 60kgs

8 x 60kgs

8 x 60kgs

8 x 60kgs

8 x 60kgs

And ya i know still a long fkin way to go.....from people like Optimass who does 100kgs x 100reps...for a warm up after a holidays.....

took me like 55mins to finish it......i dont think a Zimmer frame would have helped me either....i needed a motorised character0032.gif after tat.... :pfft: :pfft: :pfft:

and it would have only helped to da stairs then i would need a zimmer frame.. :pfft: :pfft:

went to home..and had to sleep for a while....

3 days and still struggling to get off a chair...as my legs are killing me...

Lucky i have an office job and dont have to move much...

I really dont know how people with lot of physical work deal with this... :x :x :x

I would do it again for sure.......felt amazing...

Yikes.... I've tried various 10x10 but not squats. I might just give it a go.

I have done 10x10 Incline Leg Press - and even at around 60% of my normal weight for 10-rep sets, by the end I was wrung out like a rag, and found legs shaking like a mofo when I finally stood up.

A few years ago when I was a iron crazed grunting gym beheamoth I did 10x10 deadlifts and came home, vomited, downed a mutha of a shake and then slept for an hour.Good times.

Today I gave the 10x10 squats a go. WIth slowly getting back into the gym and tendonitis slowing me down over the last few years I picked 100kgs as the weight.

What a mental f&^k over!!! Your legs are constantly saying "NO NO NO" but with glistening brow, sweat stained shirt and bloodshot eyes you will the weight down and then up again. Can say the last 3 sets were a battle but did it.

The stairs on the way out of the gym are a real hazard after a workout like this  Grabbing handrails all the way down. Nap time me thinks :)

Squats were a couple of days ago, and the brunt of the pain from the 10x10 session has been about all day :boohoo: Standing up, moving around, navigating stairs, getting in and out of the car (especially that!) have all been huge struggles. I was at the beach today and even rolling over on my towel was a mammoth effort! I actually get the Zimmer frame reference now, I really feel like I need one as I'm walking around like an old man  Well, I wouldn't call it "walking", more like a sort of zombie-shuffle with hands on hips.

Quads feel like iron to the touch, can barely pinch skin off them. My Girlfriend accidentally kicked me in bed last night while she was rolling over and I snapped at her because it put me in so much pain! :pfft:

I was meant to do a spin class/gym session today, but I a) wasn't confident of making it up the stairs in Bodyworks, b) had deads and didn't think I could bend to pick up the bar, and c) didn't think I could get up onto the spin bike, let alone pedal (about to have a muscle soak bath and regardless of how the legs are I'm attacking a session tomorrow)

Still... I can't wait to do it again 8)
