Left side not as strong as right

Recommended Posts

Hi, hope this is the right board to post this question - given the light weights i'm doing it doesn't really qualify as powerlifting.... :shifty:

I started a weights program a month or so ago, and am slowly moving off machines and on to dumbells and bars. What i have noticed though especially with arm exercises is that i'm much stronger on my right side than left. I figure this probably isn't too unusual but was wondering a couple of things

- will this even out over time on it's own?

- should i do extra exercises on the left side to 'bring it up to speed'?

- if my right arm is ready to up the weights should i do so or wait until left arm is more comfortable on current weight? eg incline fly - right arm fine at 8kg, but left arm feeling it on last couple of reps at present

thanks :)

DB work will bring your left up to speed. When you left fails just stop with your right, it will catch up soon enough.

I've just had the exact sample problem with my left arm. Unequal strength in bicep curls, hammer curls and triceps as well. Just couldn't get those guns to work.

My PT said that the imbalance would get better the more I trained. I must admit the best form of training I have given my left arm is by carrying everything in my left hand.

And I mean anything.... handbag, bags of groceries (try to do as many with left arm, none in the right, don't want the right arm getting any better either as it just perpetuates the problem... get my drift?), gym bag, even just a full 1lt water bottle everywhere I go. It's done the trick, maybe taken a month or so, but I can lift the dumb bell for the same set of reps as my right arm and I am one happy chappy.

Just my 10cents worth, hope it helps you.

Solution is here - I started with the exact same problem got given this advice and it sorted me out. I think one arm stronger than the other is pretty common.
