Yoga vs Pilates

ENP

Recommended Posts

At my gym, there are either yoga or pilates classes on. They are both on at the same time so just wanting to know what the main comparisons, pros/cons of each and which is best if I want it to use as a stretching class rather than strength.

IMO pilates is far more superior than yoga. Pilates helps you to develop your core stability which helps with all the rest of your training. It helps you to be able to isolate the muscles you want to train and work them correctly. It also helps develop longer stronger muscles while making sure you are strong in the full range of movement. When I was at ballet school we had pilates classes everyday. And the Crusaders had the same pilates instructor as us

We also used to have yoga classes only once a week. To me they are just a bunch of weird poses that don't really stretch you the best way possible. Maybe good for relaxtion but a waste of time stretching for dancers.

Just my 2 cents...

Yes but in a different way. It kinda strengthens you in the stretched positions if you know what I mean... So your flexibility and strength increase togethor. But it really depends on what class you enjoy doing most. But i think you will benefit more from pilates...

Ok, from the research I've done myself, pilates seems to be the way to go. Realistically, I will only be able to fit it in once a week, maybe twice over the winter. Will once per week be enough to see any benefits?

You will more likely feel the benefits I think. But I have gotten a lot of my friends into pilates at home just using dvds and some of them think its better then the gym!! You will really notice a difference if you start doing a few exercise morning and night.. they don't take long :D

Fantastic. Thanks so much for your help. I can't wait to stretch out my sore muscles!

Yoga - It came way earlier

Yoga has been around for over 5000 years. It is something much more than just a way of exercising. In fact, it is a lifestyle change that many people need to take seriously. This type of program is centered on the spiritual healing of the body as well as the physical aspects. It uses a wide combination of breathing and movements to get the body back into its targeted range. Yoga is something that encompasses the entire lifestyle in ethical, spiritual and physical form.

It is important to note that yoga is centered on meditation and that the poses that are done are done to allow for better concentration and better meditation abilities.

Pilates - It's a whole different animal

Pilates, on the other hand, is a physical healing process that uses movements and breathing to work. In Pilates, the body is taken from one movement to the next in a fluid change. This allows for continuous improvement in the body in a normal way. Pilates uses Contrology in its dance form. In this, the poses that are done are more fluid and provide for a more natural movement from one to the next.

Both of these types of programs allow for individuals to improve in their health and well being through breathing techniques. Controlled, regulated breathing is very important to the success of yoga or Pilates. Which Should I Choose?

In order to know which of these you should choose, the best way to know which the better choice is for you is to actually give them a try.

I can't comment My man and I were asked to leave the one and only class we did. :pfft:

Why was that?

Well we were the people in the back of the class laughing, pocking faces at each other, and just being complete dicks. Well when we saw some of the moves that they did we just looked at each other and well enough said.... :clubbed: :boohoo:
