University of Auckland Powerlifting Championships

Recommended Posts

The annual Auckland University Powerlifting Championships will be held on Saturday the 17th of October 2009. It is an open, male and female event, so any member of the general public (with some basic 3-Lift or bench only experience) is welcome to enter. The event is a combined 3-Lift and Bench only competition. You may enter just the 3-Lift competition or the bench competition only, or both combined.

Weigh in will run from 8.00 am and finish at 9.30 am. Liftting will commence at 10 am. Lifting order is that typical of normal powerlifting competitions: squat, bench press, deadlifts.

The event is divided into 2 sections: Open and Amateur. Open lifters are permitted (but not required) to wear powerlifting supportative gear - ie. squat and deadlift suits and bench shirts (and of course, belts, wrist and knee wraps). They are intended to be lifters with several years lifting experience. Amateur lifters are intended to be lifters with less than two years experience. They are NOT permitted to wear powerlifting supportative gear (but can wear belts, wrist and knee wraps).

Entry is free to all Auckland University gym members and is $20 for non-members. There are generous gym membership and Musashi prizes for placing in the top 3, male and female, of both the Open and Amateur sections, 3-Lift and Bench only. There will also be medals and placing certificates.

Normal powerlifting rules will apply, but with a degree of leniency, especially in the Amateur section. A basic idea of the lifting rules is as follows:

Squat: the lifter must unrack the bar and stand up with legs straight and wait for the "start" call before squatting down to a depth of thighs slightly below parallel and then standing back up straight awaiting the "rack" call before stepping forward to rack the bar. Feet must not move from the spot for the duration of the lift.

Bench press: after receiving the hand-off from the spotters, the lifter must hold the bar still with arms straight awaiting the "start" call, at which point the bar shall be taken down to the chest and paused motionless on the chest awaiting the "press" call, at which time the bar is pressed back so that arms are fully extended and held locked out awaiting the "rack" call when the bar can be racked. The bar may pause when being pressed back up, but must NOT come back down at all even if th lifter still manages to lock it out. The lifter's head and top of bum must remain on the bench and soles of feet flat on the ground AT ALL TIMES during the lift.

Deadlift: adopting either a regular or sumo stance the lifter pulls the bar straight up so that they are standing upright with torso, legs and arms straight and shoulders pulled back and down. Bar must not be "hitched" on thighs to get it up. Bar can be lowered as soon as referee says "down" and both hands must remain on the bar until it has reached the ground.

There is no formal dress code, but please wear something reasonably tidy and clean, shoes and socks. Shorts are preferred to long pants as it makes it easier for the referees to see if you have reached depth in the squat and are keeping your bum on the bench in the bench press.

Any questions feel free to post or PM.

Matt, how will placings be decided in the open classes? Bodyweight formula, Wilks points, IPF classes? I'm weighing in around 140kg and obviously wouldn't want placings based off a linear formula where a 102.5kg squat at 70kg beats a 200kg squat at 140kg.

Also, could you give an idea of what Musashi prizes would be incl for places 1-3?

Yes, appreciate your concerns about how placings are calculated! Placings will be calculated by the Wilks formula. Musashi has been generous with its prizes. They will be providing protein powders, post workout recovery formula etc to the value of hundreds of dollars for the various place-getters.

Cheers!

Thanks a bunch, I will consider lifting then. Do you have any idea when you're expecting the meet to be finished? I imagine you guys would run a pretty quick operation.

Lol, and you became my manager when? NZSM is 3 days before I fly out for USC, this comp is 7 weeks before then and no one said anything about maxing out and going for an 850 total.

We should be able to run a quick comp. We are likely to have around 20 keen relatively experienced lifters, maybe a max of 25. A number will compete Bench only. Squats start at 10 am and should certainly finish by 11.30 am. Bench press will follow after a break and should take less than an hour and a half. Deadlifts should take a similar time. With calculating of placings, best lifters, prize giving etc after the lifting, it should certainly be totally over before 5 pm.

Your massive squatting and deadlifting at Rec Centre at the New Zealand Nationals recently were very very impressive - congratulations. Well done on the Guinness World Records too. It was great to watch you on TV.

LOL, man up and come to NZSM, Sam wants to beat you and Nick LOL

Understand the logic, as long as your back is 100%, otherwise just pay for your protein like everyone else!!!

Sounds like a fun comp none the less, look forward to seeing the results!

Good job there Matt for running the meet. Im sure it will a success and a good way to get a few new lifters into the sport. Its good to see Aucklands numbers climbing again and the Uni gym has been a big part of that success this year (and RN). I hope it continues. Sounds like its going to be an awesome meet and if Big Mac lifts that will be a real treat for those novice lifters seeing the big fella do his thing.

Good Luck

Thank you for the kind words! Yes it has been great to see many new Auckland lifters coming through. There is a good community of them in our gym. It's always a treat for the novice (and more experienced) lifters, when the likes of Big Mac (and your good self) compete at any event. So it will be tremendous if he decides to participate.

We will do our best to put on a friendly, enjoyable meet, with a little more informality than the official NZ Association events. Some of the Auckland Association guys will be helping out with running it.

Cheers Tonka.

I may come down and have a look as well*. I'm not gonna be in any condition to do it unfortunately but I'd come have a glance.

* Assuming the buses are running by then

Dude, get your wife to do it. 180kg deadlift would make some boys cry.
