Sorry I can't help, but I know you can get referrals to legitimate pain clinics through your GP / DHB.

I would tread very carefully with alternative practitioners as the level of Quals / Service will differ immensely. Someone here may have a good contact though?

Ortho surg is going to try and get me into one in Hamilton.

What sort of pain if I may ask?

Massive amounts of scar tissue on my sciatic nerve effecting my left leg and giving chronic pain down my left leg. Numbness and loss if reaction also.

All started with a slipped disc. Was on voltaren for 3 years, now off it and using catapres patches on my back. Been though around 8 different pain killers so far.

Had a op around 2 years ago, injury was 3 years ago now. Was told this morning they cant do much for me. Felling depressed today :(

i feel ya. i got major back issues too, get pins and needles down both legs from pinched nerves and slipped disks. and shattered my hip joint a couple years ago which has screwed me, lack of flexability, movement and stregnth. hit up yoga.

f*ck what they say its about what your capable of.

stregnthen muscles and learn to recruit surrounding muscles to take pressure off the spine, also hip abductors and adductors (sp).

i was told i wouldnt be able to to physical sports, since then ive become a NZ MMA fighter. so its all up to you mate.

doctors give a generic diagnosis, but your not a generic person. just gotta believe it.

as for pain relief, i got hooked on codines hard, not cool.

itl pass with time if you train your body to work with your injury by recruiting muscles etc.

Hey man,

Sorry about the chronic pain, it must be a real downer!

As someone who has suffered from depression and long-lasting pain, I can highly recommend mindfulness (or vipassana) meditation.

It really helps to calm the mind and gives you peace and perspective.

Basically the aim is to focus on your breath, and only your breath. When you notice other thoughts arising, acknowledge them, then refocus on your breath.

It's that simple and very effective, but can be really challenging at first.

There are lots of websites that explain it more fully and, if you're interested you should check out "Mindfulness in Plain English" by Henepola Gunaratana. There's a link to the full text here, but it's a full-sized book, so you might be better off looking for it in a library or book store.

Good luck, mate.

Not sure what im going to do, prob go chat to my GP next week. Bet i will just end up waiting for the clinic.

Doesnt kill my pain and i dont want to f*ck my brain thanks, got my empire to build

I've been in heaps of pain since developing Fibromyalgia. I had to give up weights due to pain. To keep it short I found relief in a drug called "Nortriptyline" I am about to resume my weights program. Something I didn't think I could ever do again.

Nortriptyline wasn't suitable for some reason, i have tried everything available.

Im on 75mg Diclofenac twice a day and 50mg of Amitrip at night. Keeps me happy. Diclofenac shouldn't work for my pain but does...odd.

Got pain management clinic on the 4th of feb. Will see what happens then.

Wow - Interesting about all the pills & potions doctors & surgeons give out. I've been waiting for a hip replacement (i'm 33) for 3 years, and just started training again. Deep Tissue Massage has been good for my pain, and refered pain also slowly reduces.

It's hard when in pain all the time, but some days I'm fine and others I really struggle with the pain - just from day-to-day walking around etc, let-alone after training legs (which I'm working back into) .....what I find works best is 2 Codine & glass of red-wine.

The pain is worse at night which means little sleep, which means prolonged tiredness. I also have stuggled with depression, bit up & down over last few years - Chronic pain over a long period really sucks!! I've always considered myself to be a positive, non-complainer but the last few years having this condition has really changed my view on those who suffer from long-term pain conditions - even as a PT.

Recently I've been working on a better pain management plan to help in my increased training and being back in the gym as a PT etc. I recently tried an non-steroidal antiflam called Tilcotil but stared getting nose bleeds everyday, and an acne-looking rash over my face and torso - so I stopped taking that - and still had the same pain anyway - not much difference. Now I'm back on paracetomol (4xday), Diclofenac (2x day) and codiene when required (with a dash of red wine  ).

The sound of these pain management clinics are great!! I wonder if there are some in the Wellington Region. I'd like to find out more - Cheers.

Spose i should update.

Pain management clinic was a waste of time, only thing they can offer is a epidural which im waiting to get. I have used up all options, after epidural there are no other options to try.

My pain management clinic doctor was the biggest hypocrite ever, told me not to end up like Arine either. Wanted to punch him in the face.

Know what you mean about the daily struggle and how some days are worse than others and the other issues you face.

Have you tried accupuncture?

Pre op, yes

looking for someone that is decent at it. Know anyone in Auckland?

Theres a place on Dominion Road, I think it's called the Chinese Clinic. It was across te road from Wiremu st, down from Potters park/KFC.

The guy there is an old as Chinese guy who speaks like 5 words of English, but he fixed my hand (where the anti-flams and meds never).

That was a few years ago now, but I would go for the old wrinkled asians when it comes to acupuncture. 50 years of it must make you good. Like I said, it worked for me, after a car accident screwed up my hand and wrist.

Next time I drive past, I will look for the shop and give you a detailed address.

For massage, I go to the THERAPEUDIC Thai massage at Royal Oak. People, if yu haven't had an hour under the skills of a thai you are missing out. Hot oils, hot stones, full body deep tissue for $55! can't beat it.

http://www.siamthaimassage.co.nz/

I could live there.
