Hi,

I am a 36 old Systems Engineer in New Plymouth.

I am currently 125KG 186cm in height and have been unfit for a while now.

I have lost 25 KG over the past 4 months by changing my diet and now starting to incorperate exercise and a more strict diet to reach my goals.

I want to not only getfit, but eventually compete in bodly building.

My current diet is high protien, low carb (less than 20g daily), I eat every 2 hours, I am awake, and mainly using protien shakes as my primary foods, but also have meats, eggs, a centruim once a day and a redseal "effergize" multi complex, I also monitor my drinking and drink at least 2L of filtered water a day.

I have started walking the 5.3 km to my work each morning (1st once was yesterday), which is taking me 60 mins at the moment, I start with boxing in about 2 weeks, to assist with cardio and upperbody.

I would love to hear from the old hands and advise that will help me reach my goals, manage hunger pains, tips and tricks, as well as possibly find a training partner when I start in the gym.

Wow good on you for being motivated

Do you go to a gym, lift weights etc? Squats are cool. They're like medicine. Yes you can OD on them, as with anything, but done proper they will make you awesome 8)

It'd be helpful to others if you ask specific questions too. Also check out the other sections on this site. The workout journals will give you an idea of what exercise people do, how they eat, etc.

And there's a bodybuilding for beginners section on this site, at the top of the page on the Resources tab. Did I mention squats are cool? :shifty:

Good luck with your goals :)

Hey all :)

I have backed off on the diet a little.

I joined the YMCA gym, and got a good trainer (Ryan) whos put me on a boot camp style training, flipping tractor tyres and pulling them along mixed with high intensity cardio twice a week and weights and strength for the rest.

Seems like a good start to get me going.

I have been experimenting with the weight levels,

I leg press 205Kg,

Shoulder Press 160Kg

bench press 110Kg? (I thought this was really low)

Dumb bells feel good at about 45 Kg

These are the top end for reps, and can just finish a 3 set at these levels.

What do you guys suggest for working at?

Month one starts on Friday morning with me and the tractor tyre getting real friendly :) I expect the to be some swearing at the end of it heh.

Oh,

Still looking for a training buddy that is willing to give me a good kicking when I hit the wall in a month.

I will report back later in the week.

Angelbrand - there are many theories on diets around the place, some of which involve low-zero carb plans (Anabolic diet, Ketogenic type diets etc).

Might pay to have a read up before dismissing the idea

@ uni we had it drilled into our head that the nerons that fire muscles work from carbohydrate and if you have almost none you can cause severe injury, we were also told to loose weight you need to reduce enery input while increasing output but 1/4-1/3 of RDI for your body type. If this is wrong im sorry but that is what is taught in nz universitys

Which university are you at? Because that certainly isn't what is taught at Otago University. Can't comment on any of the others

Welcome Nasis.

Good on you for starting training. You will get many opinions on your choice of diet. Try different things and work out what works best for you as its different strokes for different folks! The walking is a great start. When you start boxing you should notice a massive difference  Do whatever it takes to stay motivated and keep up the good work. It will change your life for the better :D
