The Anabolic Diet

I don't think I get anywhere near the 633g of carbs I'm supposed to have. Despite that, I still managed to gain 1.4kg over the weekend.

I'm already kicking myself that I didn't take before photos, but I just haven't had time. I haven't lost any weight (actually gaining if you weigh me after a weekend!) but I'm definitely dropping fat. It's good.

Yeah its been funny watching the scales yo yo through the last month, I also gain ~1.5 kg every monday but by wed/thurs its gone... Prob just water retention from all the carbs I think. It is feeling a little like the second half of the week is the effective part of it all, once you have depleted all the carbs from the weekend. I guess the less you indulge in the weekend the more effective time you have to burn fat durring the week. Ive sort of structured my lifting around this fact though so heavy low reps at the start of the week tapering to high rep short rest style work in the second half. My wieght loss is slowing now after pretty much a month but my body is still changing in the mirror so my optimistic logic tells me that I must be gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time as the diet promised. Ill get my BF% checked next week then I can give a real/scientific fact based update.

I still havent really added any cardio yet apart from my 10 min warm ups and a couple of short mountain bike rides which I was doing already before I started this diet so I might add in some next week and see what effect that has on things.

That'd be great Krab.

Anyone on the diet eating inside of takeaway burgers? IE Wendys burgers and just eating the inside? Double patties, cheese, bit of vegies and lots of fat from the meat, oil and cooking - thoughts?

Whats the puree your talking of??

LMAO - sounds way too reminiscent of Mike Mentzer's theories or probably more accurately the ramblings of the Atkins Diet (lets not forget Dr Robert Atkins himself died clinically obese and had history of congestive heart failure and hypertension).

Stop trying to take the soft options!!

Not saying that I recommend it or do it, but if your on a high fat, high protein, low carb diet then its exactly what the diet says to eat. Plenty of arguments for and against the possible health effects of the diet..

Ha, looks like I've changed the direction of this whole thread...

Threads evolve? It's still on topic...

Too true - any updates from those out there currently on the diet?

Keen to hear anyones thoughts on the diet - is it sustainable long term?

Maybe I'm impatient, or maybe I need to readjust my daily macros, but the last week feels like progress has been a bit slower. (On the other hand, the weight's up again from last week, and the bodyfat is the same or lower, so I can't really complain!)

Sustainable long term? Well, in terms of effort/committment - yes, absolutely. I'm not finding it hard to stick to at all. As for the healthiness of it - I don't know. I might get some blood tests done after a few months on it.

This is definitely a sustainable diet - I found this really easy to be on. I get to eat nice foods and don't ever feel particularly hungry. So in terms of discipline, theres no problem here....cost wise though - its not cheap!

Have you seen that documentary Fathead (think thats what it was called?). Basically the guy, who is not physically active or fit, goes on a very similar diet. He even does the whole meat from the maccas burgers. After a month or two (can't remember exact time line) he drops weight, his bloods are much better - basically a much healthier person.

OK time for that update I promised:

Right, I think that this diet may not work for everyone but it works for people like me where the relative amount of carbs drops a long way from pre-diet levels: was on a reasonably high carb diet for most of this year (in fact Ive lived off carbs most of my life). I was having around 1.5 cups white rice and 1.5-2 cups oats (measured raw) every day and I wasn’t afraid of covering the oats in sugar and around 1-1.5 L of milk a day. So plenty of carbs (never really ran the numbers). On that diet I was pretty much at static/maintenance (BF was constant anyway with a very slow increase in lean mass).

So I started my version of the anabolic diet a month ago (15th September) at 77.6 kg (8.8 % BF by skin fold, dunno about this formula, by appearance more I was more like 12-14% but it’s the changes that matter not the absolute numbers) today I weighed in at 74.6 kg (7.4 % BF by the same method) other 4week data:

Mass loss: 3 kg (water + fat)

Sum of 8 skin folds start: 81 mm

Sum of 8 skin folds now: 62 mm

Waist start: 85.3 cm

Waist now: 83.0 cm

Ass start: 99.3 cm

Ass now: 97.5 cm

I put almost a centimetre ( 0.8 ) on my bicep flexed measurement while on this diet also. Quads and chest stayed pretty much unchanged.

According to the tanita electronic scales: My fat free mass remained the same but my body water and fat values went down.

As far as strength hard to tell not noticeably down, Im just getting it back after a month on low weight high rep work. Feeling strong though

Still spotting new cuts in the mirror, just yesterday a new line appeared on my delt and now have a proper “tear drop” instead of just a blob on my quads :shifty:

I still haven’t added any specific cardio above what I was doing before and until this week I was still having 2 x Vogels + honey for breakfast and a tortia at lunch prob hovering ~ 70-80g carbs a day.

Nutrition-wise not as fancy as pseudos, been having steak and eggs most nights for dinner with the odd bowl of mince with melted cheese thrown in to mix it up. Meat and lettuce for lunch, cheese and almonds and protein shakes with water for in betweens.

Plan from here is to drop out a lil more carbs (breakfast and lunch) and bump up the protein intake (another red meat meal). I think it should be possible to gain lean mass from here as the diet promised but time will tell, will update in another month.

So in conclusion this diet is a great intro to low carbing it in my opinion so if youre looking for a diet give this a go, as long as you monitor things closely you have nothing to loose by trying...

Any questions fire away

Great summary - thanks Krab.

I think you are right - I imagine some people/body types are suited to this way of eating, where others are not... Only one way to findout I guess.

Do you all still work to a specific caloric value? How did you calculate this? Ive read the 16 - 18 x body weight examples, but I am guessing these vary based on your goals right?

Looks like your sitting on around 4260 calories Pseudonym... seems high for a cutting diet - is this different with the lack of carbs so you can still lean up on this many cals?

To be honest I didnt really plan it based on numbers I just decided what I thought would be workable and tried it thats where the "my version of the anabolic" came from

But Im basically trying to get as much protein as I can eat/afford and using cheese and nuts as snacks, I figure if Im getting enough protein and not blowing out on carbs its all good. Most of my fat intake is from cheese, red meat (mmmm steak fat), whole eggs and nuts. I just let the macros take care of themselves. Wanted to keep it as simple as poss to start then adjust from there

I estimate Im sitting on pre-diet cals still with carb cals now replaced with fat cals give or take
