Hope for NZL Open Mens BBing!

Good to see the winner of the CNI Open Mens Physique looking the way an Open Mens competitor should.

Not to take anything away from recent Mr NZ winners (or other big NZL shows), but it's been a been a long time since NZL has seen any big men winning the title (which of course is the norm anywhere internationally, btw anyone checked the depth in Australia recently!).

Would be nice to see some comparisons between Darren & previous HW mens winners & title holders??

From memory (and correct me if I'm wrong) I think the last big guy to win was probably Justin Rhys back in 1999 (or Moe 2004). But looking further back you get the likes of Hugh Willis, O'Grady, BJ Johns etc winning with a bunch of other big competitors around them.

Would be great if NZL could achieve the depth it had back then in the HW divisions? Nathan O, Darren O, and Aldene could potentially make a good line up?

Couldnt agree more Nate, Big Darren is exactly that...hes huge. He hit the stage weighing in around 114kg on Saturday and is still peaking for nationals in two weeks - that will be a great show.

To go with his size, he is immensely strong as well - he moves big iron!

Hell yeah, he looks awesome allright. Its so true though. I remember Hugh sude to be onstage at 113kg, and your right there were loads of big guys competing back then! When you look at how much bigger the pros are since those days. In comparison the heavyweight division in NZ has gone backwards (with the exception of moe)

Simple reason why the big guys haven't won recently is.....they haven't been good enough.

Winning requires balance not just mass for mass sakes.

Why give first prize to 110kg monsters with something missing.

Take a look at Darren's pics from the Elite and look at what he has done to his legs, he identified an area that needed work and dealt to it- bringing together the balance required.

This is what makes him such an immense threat- his combination of balance, detail and size.

To focus on his size alone is a diservice to the great dedication, work and patience he has put in on his diet and bringing up his legs.

Agree re: your last comment. Good overall package no dispute & full credit.

But the thread remains that NZL has had very limited "big boys" that can foot it an international level. Smaller men have been winning because the depth that existed 10 years ago just hasnt been there in recent times.

As you point out an out of shape big guy shouldn't win a comp. But a good big man should always beat a well conditioned smaller guy (this is bodybuilding afterall, not atlhletic).

We just haven't had the numbers of good big guys for a while. Australia has, as have other countries, and I believe for many it has distorted their views of what is competative in Open Mens BBing.

Young Steve Orton was a great example, clearly a natural talent with a good future. But all over I see people saying he should be a pro in 2 years.....c'mon guys lets not kid ourselves, we've already seen the huge step up it takes.

Spoke to the big fella this morning to congratulate him.

He's pretty low key about the win as it's a stepping stone to the Nats.

After seeing the photos i'm really looking forward to seeing the showdown at the Open Mens this year, having several truely big, conditioned competitors like Big D and Nato competing its shaping up as a cracker.

Side note: Jesus I didn't recognize Loochi clean shaven!

Looking sharp dude, I'm assuming if you posed down versus Darren then you won your class? Congrats mate!

How'd you do 1 day?

Funny you should say that Mike,

Was thinking about the 1998 show, pretty sure you were 98kg then? I was impressed with your size & condition and remember having a conversation (with someone much more knowledgeable than myself!) and the comment was passed that you had the potential to be a Pro with some hard work. Ten years later it happened!

However, and I'm sure you'd be the first to admit it, your size and condition in your next two wins (if we ignore the 98 & 2000 technicalities  ) wasn't a patch on '98, particularly in 2007 when you must've been low 90's at most?

If you had won the nationals looking like you did in your Pro debut I would've definately added you in 'the big fella' list!

Nate

PS - MD no way you're 174cm, closer to 164cm - Mike Kingsnorth can you confirm this! :pfft:

me, i had issues , didnt get lean enuff and had trouble dropping my water so came in pritty crap. but ohwell, all about learning, so im off to nats anyway ,been asked to help out back stage so be cool to help out and support all my mates competing. :D
