After a few months of observing those at my own gym, I'm really interested as to how many serious gym-goers actually listen to ipods/mp3 players whilst exercising.

From my recent "studies", I would have to conclude the serious majority don't, which i find hard to believe

.... which leads me to think its just my strange gym (which is somewhat populated by um, "mature' people  ).

NOTE: this poll doesn't apply if you train with a training partner, obviously. :pfft:

For those who do listen to music, please share your trademark "power song" This is that song which is guarenteed to get you pumping and moving/lifting more powerfully than ever. My gym playlist is seriously lacking at the mo...

I didn't used to, but the playlist at Bodyworks seems to be pretty limited and I got sick to death of hearing some of the same old songs over and over again, "Whiskey in the Jar" being the biggest culprit.

I have an arm band thingy, and I just put the cord behind my neck if it's getting in the way.

I'm often semi-listening to podcasts rather than music when I'm training. For me it's kind of like having a radio on, and I only half listen, so that my focus is on my training - but so that there is also something amusing to listen to between sets. I often listen to radio shows from the UK (Chris Moyles from the UK, etc), but some of them can be a bit too funny, which is bad news if you're halfway through a chestpress and burst out laughing  So something a bit more serious is usually a better idea.

I probably look a bit mental though - just like a normal girl working out with iPod on, then randomly laughing every now and then!

I train in the shed with a couple of mates so we just crank cds, but if i was going to the gym i would deff use one, i have horrible taste in music (bloodbath and macabre are favs atm) and metal makes me angry = more effort put in, i dont think i could survive on normal gym music

Im a BIG YAY on this!! :D

haha and im with gym rat on the fact I use it for cardio and not really for weights!

At the moment I can only cycle due to knee injury so I have a playlist named "Bicycle Bicycle!" (after the queen song Bicycle race haha)

I like mainly hard out dance songs, but i have an interesting mix on my playlist

You Spin Me Right Round, Dead or Alive ( Pretty much a given!)

Shake your pom pom, Missy Elliot

Shooting Star, LMFAO

Holiday, Dizzee Rascal

Electric Dream, Shapeshifter

Move Shake Drop Remix, DJ LAZ

Rock This Party, Bob Sinclair

Kansas City, Sneaky Sound System

Smash Disco, Vandalism

and there are a few more..when I was running TNT by ACDC was my fav..brings out the bogan within

try these songs if you havent heard out some..I highly recommend :)

 There is one guy who comes in to BW 2-3 lunchtimes a week (wearing the same clothes!) and ALWAYS puts on a couple of Seal songs and a couple of Crowded House songs  I used to be impartial to either on the odd occasion, but every time this guy comes in makes me turn up the headphones and I now have an intense dislike for the songs. That and the remix of Christina Aguilera's version of Carwash that seems to play every pump/aerobics class when I walk in  Repeats her doing that awful HeyeEYEyEyyeyEYEY "line" over, and over again. Eurck.

My power song is Eye of the Tiger, especially when I'm running  A bit cliché, I know, but it gets me going. But yeah, an iPod (or currently, my iPhone for conveniences sake) is a must for me to zone out at the gym. For weights I just thread the headphone cord under my shirt and stick the iPhone in my pocket. I take it out for squats or any exercises where it may get in the way though.

Music is a must have for cardio. And I listen to my ipod if I'm doing weights on my own. Helps keep my mind clear. And I can't handle the terrible selection at the gym.

I usually listen to something heavy, fast, and some intense drumming helps. At the moment its Trivium, Slipknot and some recently dug up old megadeth.

Its always a treat when the songs rhythm syncs prefectly with running or skipping.

Yay. Weights and Zimmer shuffle. Training partner or not :pfft: 8)

I like to be able to choose what's infecting my brain. A lot of 'popular' music is full of memes and crap I'd rather not listen to. For example, I heard a song recently in which some pillock was whining about how he was weak. I'm so weak, waaa waaa waaa  Aside from being really annoying, urm, yeah like that'll get you going aye! :snooty: :pfft:

I do the same a, but have found that where a have a plate on my lap or lock my thighs under a pad I always feel that I am going to crush the ipod. It also tends to fall out of my pocket on decline or the 45 lp.

Couldn't get through my workout without hardcore dnb though...heh.

Maybe grow some moobs so you can wear a bra? That's where I put mine, in my bra. It has two layers and I put it in between the layers so it doesn't get clammy. Not that chicks sweat or anything cos that'd be gross aye. But yay it doesn't fall out or get in the way of anything 8)

Very interesting people, very interesting. Thank you! Seems like my suspition about the 'mature' folk was right. Guess them and technology don't mix. :pfft:

Lucky you have two layers. I used to do that.... awesome way to ruin 3 nano's! :pfft: Now i just use a clip-mp3 player with very minimal cords. Its tiny and never gets in the way. They so need to invent a bra with a ipod holder!

Omg I LOVE that! Thats what makes the ultimate running song, particually if its HIIT running when you need all the stamina/motiviation you can muster as to avoid going flying off the treadmill. In fact i don't think i could do HIIT without music. :?

Ohhh i Been there, done that. :pfft: Try laughing and lunging.....aint the best combo!

Ooo nice, cheers for the suggestions, they sound alot like my type of music... as opposed to the heavy mental others seem to be fond of on here. So trying some of them!

If I train at home I have my music on pretty loud (old school hip-hop/rap mostly). At the gym I find earphones and cords get in the way too much, if I could play my own cds at the gym I would but the music they play is fine I hardly notice it anyway.

I train with my ipod at all times, it helps me block out people around me and soley focus on getting my workout done without interuptions..

I use wireless headphones with the transmitter pluged into my ipod and a wireless range of 15-20feet...

mm..yeah..Metallica beats all....

I use to while doing cardio but that is a pretty rare thing these days, the music of choice was always hard rock (partial to anything really creed, evanescence or old school metallica). For a while there one song I always found inspirational was Iris, always made me think of the contender series much like the whole eye of the tiger does for rocky.

For weights though I just zone out and do my thing, call me a snob but I barely talk to anyone.

One thing I will note about listening to the ipod is I was always worried that I was making more noise than normal, you know what it is like when you talk with headphones in you can only imagine the amplified breathing and grunting.... for those of you who grunt.
