Crossfit in New Zealand?

Hi guys,

I was wondering if Crossfit is very big in New Zealand as I live in Melbourne but will be moving home in a month or so and love Crossfit...

Are there many Gym's or instructors that specialize in it?

Does it have much of a future there ( i hope so :D )?

Sorry about all the questions... any help would be great thanks.

Here is a link to the Crossfit HQ in case you don't know what Im talking about but I sure you do... http://www.crossfit.com/

ive been scoping out crossfit for a while. its filth.

i think the nz one is a bit more....gayer tho.

i dunno, i checked out the states ones when i first heard about it and was convinced it was filth, and ready for me, but then finding the chch one i sorta got a bit put off. seems more of a personal trainer business on steroids rather than a meeeean workout style/facility/tecnique...

personally, i love the idea. just the states version is more appealing to me.

That surprises me coming from some one with Tapout as a profile pic, but it isn't for everyone... It is however INTENSE!!! If you like to bring it in the Gym then it is for you.

Thanks for the advise tho PTinCHCH :D

Encouraging atmosphere, I'd agree with that.

As far as an expert coach goes, judging by the technique I see cross fitters use I would say the coaching is hardly expert. Although I am also aware of some people who I would definitely regard as good coaches in America, Mike Burgener an example.

The fact that "Everyone who pays $1,000 to attend a "Level 1" weekend seminar is certified as a CrossFit trainer; there are currently no pre-requisites or exams." (Ref:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CrossFit) leaves a lot to be desired in my mind. It suggests somebody can set-up a cross fit gym, with a Level 1 certifcate, and call themselves a certified cross fit trainer, I hope these arn't the "expert coach" you speak of.

However, I like the fact Crossfit uses Olympic Lifts, exposure for OL - my sport, will never be a bad thing.

Don't worry, Couch is getting enough gin money these days to run all the good coaches off, so cringe-worthy cleans and exploding joints can be the rule of the day.

Everett, Rippetoe, Dan John, you name it, he's run 'em off for trying to make sense.

Crossfit is best choice for you ...It’s 'real world' strength ....They teach classes in functional exercise; kettlebell training, Olympic weightlifting and gymnastics...Finally, CrossFit is FUN! Here you will find both coaches and participants welcoming, supportive, and committed to creating an environment where everyone can succeed..... Good luck .....

CrossFit is a very good functional fitness program but it does come across as quite 'cultish" and American in parts. I had a discussion with a CrossFit trainer recently who was very reluctant to the idea of any other systems for fitness or strength had any meaningful foundations and they stated that "their way was the way forward" all the time.

I'm currently involved in a debate about the underpinnings of @F on an affiliate blog, and it amazes me how dogmatic they can get with their limited understanding of exercise science and physiology.

I've got nothing against the concept, as I remind everyone, but some of the statements they make are just outrageous and unsupportable.

I agree and I think that this is the disappointing part. I'm quite happy for them to do their thing but... a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous.

Intense and akward does not equal functional. I get sick of hearing talk about CF training being functional. Functional for what?

CF seems like a good way to get in shape. It seems like a retarded way to train any sort of athlete outside of preseason GPP. As long as that is realised, may they go their own way.
