JONAH LOMU - competing for NZFBB this Saturday!

It's not a big secret down this way, but I've been given the OK to officially announce that rugby legend, Jonah Lomu, is making his bodybuilding debut this Saturday at the 2009 Les Mills NZFBB Wellington Champs!

Bodybuilding has always been a passion of Jonah's since he was a teenager and he finally gets on stage just weeks before he flys off to play more rugby in France. While he will not be as conditioned as some of the other competitors, he has lost nearly 25kg in 6 months and at approx 115-120kg will be quite an imposing sight on stage! Coping with significant health issues and taking medication for them has hindered him in getting "cut" but he has been a warrior in the gym and lifting ridiculous weights during his prep.

The All Blacks are in Wellington this week to prepare for their match against Aussie this Saturday, so I'll be inviting them to the pre-judging to cheer the big fella on!

I've already managed to beat his kidney's original owner (Grant Kareama) at the 2000 NZFBB Nationals, does that mean I can claim to have beaten Lomu!

Good on him for giving it a shot, unsure how extreme he could go (dieting wise) without impacting on his health condition, but he's certainly got one hell of a frame on him!

Good luck to Jonah!

Ummmmmmm wake up guys!

Most BBers here didn't seem to know a thing about Jonah competing.

This guy used to get contracts for millions of dollars to endorsed products on top of his rugby contracts.

Is NZL Bodybuilding about to miss the biggest marketing opportunity in its history or what?!

NZFBB exec, for your sports sake spend some money, advertise on TV, get every newspaper, televison & radio station in NZL (not just wgtn!) and get some promo value from this!!!!!!!

If nothing happens (and all we get to see is a little slot on the news and some comments on forums for a day or two) I'll never take another BBers comments about being a poor minority sport seriously again!

If Jonah did a strongman comp there'd be billboards advertising it!

Awesome! I hope you Wellingtonians take plenty of photos for the rest of poor buggers who can't make it.

If Lomu is competing, hopefully the media will show a bit more interest than usual too.

Also I hope you Wellingtonians flim Jonah poseing as well which would be great to watch

Will have stills and video going on Saturday and photos lodged on here early.

Looks like NZMM might be upstaged on Saturday by the rugby legend!!!

Don't worry, Nate - the media is very quickly picking up on this. Jonah and his trainer (Joe Ulberg) were in the store an hour ago and the Dom Post sports editor phoned Jonah and spoke for 15 minutes with him. They're doing a photo shoot of their training session tonight at Les Mills and doing a front page story on tomorrow's Dom Post.

I've also notified TV1, TV3, Sky Sport / Prime and The Crowd Goes Wild.

There were several good reasons not to release this info earlier - mainly because there was no guarantee that Jonah would get on stage. He decided if he got to one week out and all was OK then he was 100% certain to do it. So I got the OK this morning to release this info. He's also hoping to do the NZFBB Nationals in Auckland - he is due to get back from an Olympic conference in Copenhagen at midnight on Oct 9 ... just 9 hours prior to the event starting!

One significant reason Jonah is doing the show is to help promote the image of bodybuilding. And while he will be an intimidating sight on stage at nearly 120kg, he is humble and realistic enough to know he is certainly not a world beater as a bodybuilder and just happy to realise his dream to get on stage.

Oh, he bought 2 tubs of Dream Tan when he was in the store .. I asked him is he only tanning his legs?! :pfft:

OK, I wasn't sure if I was going to go...but this clinches it.

MT, are you selling tickets from the shop?

Yes, TFB - the tickets are only available from the Xtreme Health & Nutrition store on Taranaki Street. Sales have been very good - less than 180 tickets are left for the night show now, and about 230 for pre-judging. Once the front page article hits the Dominion Post tomorrow I'd expect the remaining tickets (and pre-judging) to sell out pretty quickly!

Good work Master Tel.

Get onto the NZFBB affiliates as well, Jonah is a cult figure overseas so get some international media attention as well!

The Wgtn & NZFBB exec should spend this week doing more promo work than NZFBB's done in it's existence! Go hard now & take advantage of this once in a lifetime marketing opportunity.

I'd better get myself over to your shop and get me a ticket then! I'll sneak out of work this morning and grab one (can you save me one - pre-judging and finals) - not sure when you open, but I'll be in as soon as I can!
I've put a Combo aside for you, Chillicat! We open the doors at 10am.
