I know that 'officially' you cant lose fat and gain muscle, and ive seen heaps of arguments on forums about it, but i cant help but think you can.

If a person was say obese, having around say, 7000cals per day, hes got alot of bodyfat, some mucle, and weighs a hell of a lot.

So then he decides, ill start hitting the gym. So he starts lifting weights 5 days a week. Now he also decides to drop his calories back to say 3500cal.

It would seem to me that he would still be able to gain muscle on 3500cal and at the same time his bodyfat levels would drop because of the huge calories diffirence. Basically 7000calories used to be maintanence calories, so by dropping it to 3500 he would drop weight and at the same time gain some muscle mass because the calories are still high enough.

I know that technically its impossible, im not so sure...

you might be able to do if for a while when you 1st start working out, however for the gym goers been training for a couple years gaining eg 10kg muscle and dropping eg 10kg fat at the same time is impossible.

of course whn you bring drugs into the equation.. things change

the 7000 calories is to maintain his massive mass, of mostly fat, im sure he would be able to gain some muscle, what if he was to drop the calories to 6000 then? Still a ton, technically its a calorie deficit, but 6000 cals????, he must be able to gain some muscle mass...

Its just sounds weird, everyone says you cant but when you think of it like that its hard to understand why.

I dont think we aill solve this cutting and muscle building argument, I do believe you can loose bodyfat and increase lbm but never mind.

Green tea can be drunk no matter what the diet is I do and honestly it doesnt make a huge difference I can drink between 5-10 cups a day without noticing any change. maybe i am a green tea non responder!!

Agree. remember that if you feed the lean mass (only) only the lean mass will grow. the body will use up energy stored in fat. and if training is invovled. the energy will be used to build more lean mass.

On the subject of green tea though. It has some anti oxidant properties. which helps in body functions, liver cleanse, and fat loss. I try to have at least one a day

I think it depends how you're cutting. When we talk about caloric deficits, it's important to remember not all calories are equal. A gram of protein has the same calories as a gram of carbs, but the body uses them in quite different ways.

If you simply scale down your diet, then sure, you'll reach a caloric deficit - but your protein, carb, and fat intake will proportionately remain the same, and so your body composition will remain largely the same too (albeit scaled down to accomodate the lower calories).

Now let's say you decrease the carb intake in your diet, and increase the protein. Your body will be running on the same number of calories, but the functions these calories perform are different. You're now taking in more protein (proportionately, if not actually) so that means more muscle building and maintenance. And you've got fewer carbs coming in, which means less energy, so as Frogie says, your body will turn to its fat stores to make up the shortfall. Thus, yes it is possible to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time.

I know that's a gross oversimplification, and there are circumstances where this doesn't work, but you get the point, I'm sure!

Oh, and green tea? Never tried it....

A cup of green tea everyday is fine mate.

It wont make you loose weight, in fact itll be all the better cause it helps you digest heavy food loads a bit better.

Once you start drinking upwards of 3 cups a day, start worrying about weight loss from it.

It depends on the ammount of standarized catechins in the serving.

Most coffee drinkers have a cup or two a day without loosing weight right ... i.e. is about : 70 - 200mg of caffeine a day ?

Whats the equivalent of about 80 - 100g of caffeine from green tea going to do in a day... at the most slightly raise your metabolism while its a new shock to the body. After about 2 weeks your body will adapt to this and even that spike will further drop to nothing.

A cup of green tea ISNT going to have any negative effects on a person trying to gain weight.

Stop overanalysing things and just eat some more if your worried about it.

BTW weight loss is an individual thing... some people dont respond to green tea at all, others do very well... theres no solid research on this stuff to say how much for what.. just use your intuition and watch your body for changes.
