Opinion on Anabolic Steriods

Sup guys and maybe gals?

I'm a doing Year 13 Biology internal on a "contemporary biological issue" and decided to do mine on the use of anabolic steriods in bodybuilding/sport.

One question asks me to find a range of differing opinions relating to my topic and also biological implications.

I'll be reading through some cycle logs etc but just wondering if you could help me out by answering the questions in bold (whether you're a user/ex user/never used them).

Help me pass

I think you need to rephrase that, so it forms a question. Then you'll be more likey to get results/answer you can table/present as findings.

E.g. "Do you think the use of Anabolic steriods is harmful?".....

Nice interesting assignment topic though!

Answers by a non-user.

1. I don't like the idea of steroids for enhanced muscle growth. I especially dislike newbies without a base mass who want "fast results".

2. Yes. It's like playing Half-Life 2 and being given all the weapons by using a cheat code. Sure you still have to think how to use the Gravity Gun, but you slash monsters much faster. However, I think it's okay to use them when you are a Pro and compete with other users. It's because everyone at that level uses them.

3. I saw Greg Valentino saying they have serious side effects.

4. Yeah I know some. But I met all of them after they started taking steroids, so I don't know about the changes.

1. Indifferent

2. Not if they don't act under the pretense they are natural.

3. A lot of negative hype. It's been said a million times before but "Bigger, Stronger, Faster" presents a pretty balanced view.

4. Yes. Emotions not visibly, physique most definitely.

Use bigger stronger faster as the positive, there are others similar on youtube also see 'steroids saved my life'. Any sport body/olympic committee or the media will provide the opposing viewpoint.

more like use steroids saved my life as a fail.

a skinny ectomorph geek who didnt know how to eat or train, didnt even take any supplements went straight to roids to help with his weak self esteem

Questions for ex-users:

1. Are you pleased with the results of using anabolic steroids?

Yes - I trained for a significant amount of time before experimenting. Got to a point where my gains in strength were out weighed by the amount of bodyfat I was holding. (So I gave up competitive bodybuilding). Using sauce gave me another level to play on.

2. If not, why? IMO - if you were not pleased with the results you probably should have researched more before going ahead with it, as the benefits are not a right of passage. You have to eat right / train right / train hard to get the best from a cycle.

3. Did you encounter any side effects while using? Do any still effect you?

Acne on forearms / hair loss at the top - permanent  / hair gain at the bottom (is the only ongoing problem :pfft: :shifty: ) / my pills temporarily shrunk / and I grew very big :)

4. Do you consider the use of anabolic steroids "cheating"?

Only if you compete in an event that is sanctioned and where the sanctions are backed up 100% and not left to the prevailing executives of the time to descide on the day.

Was Tiger woods lasic eye surgery cheating? - unatural proceedure which enabled him to see the hole at the other end of the course.

5. Do you tell you family/friends that you were using?

My family know yes - and I'm quite open with people I trust. Have always been this way as I want people to make informed descisions - most respect me for this and those that do know me also know how much time and work I have put in over the years in both training and researching. I have also been affected with 2 diff types of body image concerns. So I guess my family are more forgiving of it.

My kids are quite young - but when they are old enough to understand I will be straight up with them. It would be my preference that they didn't take up bodybuilding but not because of steroids. More because of the issues with body image I have had and how the sport has affected me in this way over the years. But if they choose to participate I'll give them good advice and hope they listen. If they choose to do steroids I'll try to discourage them as I do with most people - not to be a hypocrit but more because I think you need to exhaust every opportunity before going that way - in doing so you know enough to safely maximise gains. Either way I will support them and would support anyone that put in that much time researching.

(My daughters going to be a fairy princess anyway  she told me yesterday :) )

My nephew (year 13 at Dilworth) had to do a essay on a controversial issue in modern sport just last month. He chose steroids in sport. I pretty much did the essay for him (he got an achieved with merit).

Whats this!!

You pretty much did the essay for him!

Bet he didn't write that on his bebo page hahaha

So in reality YOU achieved with merit

Had he declared on the assignment that his Uncle pretty much wrote it (ala a roid user claiming to be a natural!) then his result would no doubt have been much different!

1. I think that anabolic steriods and their effects are largely misrepresented in the mainstream media. I think that long term scientific studies, by an unbias researcher, for society to be able to judge them in a more informed manner.

2. Yes and no. They are 'cheating' when they are against the rules, and only some participants have chosen to break the rules. However I don't think they should be against the rules.

3. The mainstream media is largely against the idea of steriods. They have villainized them and tend to have preformed opinions of their effects.

4. Yes. I noticed no change in their emotions, apart from maybe more self-confidence when their physique began to change.

Questions for non-users

1. What is your opinion on the use of anabolic steriods?

I'm not against using gear per se, it the 'using' and 'competing' that bothers me. (Refer to next ques) Personally, my goals aren't to be as big as Ms Olympia competitors so I'm not really tempted. I doubt I would use them anyway as I wouldn't want the risk of masculinistion, however subtle. The other possible complications don't bother me, it's just the thought of masculinisation that freaks me out.

2. Do you consider the use of anabolic steriods "cheating"?

In competitions yes. As 1day said, it's against the rules so technically it is cheating. If the user doesn't intend to compete then I think using gear is fine.

3. What have you heard about anabolic steroid use in the media?

Only really hear about it when pros from various sports are caught out in drug tests, or when someone commits a heinous crime and also happens to be a user. The implication from the media is 'roid-rage', whether or not it was ever a factor.

4. Do you know anyone who has used steroid?

Not personally no.

-If yes, did you notice any changes in their emotions and/or physique?

n/a
