Shoulder clicking

Recently I've found that my shoulders have begun 'clicking'...this especially happens when I'm doing movements like benchpress. I get an uncomfortable feeling and have to move it round until it clicks...then it feels sweet again.

I have 'clicky' sorta body (can click knees and fingers on demand) but this is only recent. Is this caused by anything in particular? I'm reasonably sure my forms good and I have a balanced program.

Both Rose & MrBig make valid points. I was thinking rotators as I'm carrying a shoulder injury & have been for some time & initially when it was bad I had a lot of movement in the shoulder joint because the rotators were not doing their stabilising job. Also I have a displaced bicep tendon so the biceptal groove thing could also be relevant. It also might be a warning that something is about to happen. Definately a program of rotator exercises has helped strengthen the whole joint up again for me.

I think rose and muscle are correct in thier diagnosis. Rotator problems normally start with the shoulder joint clicking. Over time a slight pain will be noted before becoming worse and worse. You should definately start incorperating some rotator strengthening exercises into your routine as if it does become injured you will be gutted. Rotator are very very slow to heal and come and go for years to come! This is definately one situation where an ounce of prevention is worht a pound of cure.

I tested the exercise in the link last night. This is a good flexibility exercise to incorporate with rotator strengthening exercises. As the instructions note, do it slow.

It gets the Rose tick of approval :pfft:

I've been doing rotator strengthening exercises and was relieved to note that my shoulders are not inflexible 8)

My favourite rotator strengthening exercise is the horizontal rotation one on this page (or propped version here). Because it strengthens your supraspinatus, which when weak is a common cause of shoulder problems:

"Contraction of the supraspinatus muscle leads to abduction of the arm at the shoulder joint. It is the main agonist muscle for this movement during the first 30 degrees of its arc. Beyond 30 degrees the deltoid muscle becomes increasingly more effective at abducting the arm and becomes the main propagator of this action.

The supraspinatus muscle is one of the musculotendinous support structures called the rotator cuff that surround and enclose the shoulder. It helps to resist the inferior gravitational forces placed across the shoulder joint due to the downward pull from the weight of the upper limb.

The supraspinatus also helps to stabilize the shoulder joint by keeping the head of the humerus firmly pressed medially against the glenoid fossa of the scapula."

But wait, there's more.

I've also found press ups are good for healthy shoulders. Not shit, do some every day and your shoulder health will improve. Try to isolate your shoulders more by raising your feet and tucking your elbows:

"Benefits of Push-ups: Shoulder Health. Push-ups improve shoulder health by strengthening your serratus anterior. They also teach you to Bench Press correctly."

I used to avoid dips etc but now do weighted ones because my shoulder health has improved heaps, doing horizontal rotations and press ups.

There are other exercises, but those have been key for me. Chicks naturally have weaker shoulders etc.

This page is also food for thought.
