The dangers of overtraining

I was at the gym last wednesday, when I was on the legpress doing my last set when I felt a "pop" in my rib cage below and to the right of my rhs nipple, didn't hurt so I carried on.

Thursday I'm at work and feeling a bit tired, I've just done 14 days on, and come saturday I've got 12 days off.

A mate of mine called in for a few drinks with his Mrs on thurs nite, I'm having a good time, had a couple of glasses of wine when all of a sudden I get to feeling a bit nauseas, so I make my way to the WC to do a bit of praying :puke: .by this time I'm feeling dizzy and have got cold sweats and all of my fingers have gone white :pale: ,tightness in chest and struggling to get my breath.

It's at this point i'm thinkin a trip to the hospital is in order. so when I get there they take my vitals, my resting heart rate was 99bpm and my body temp was 39.3 (and I was freezing cold).

the diagnosis was a pulled muscle in my chest combined with being tired from work, the gym and the alcohol brought on apileptic shock.

(so my "holiday" started a day early)

So now 4 days later I'm still struggling for breath but otherwise fine, the lesson here for me was that I'm not bulletproof and when I feel tired to take a few days off and I recommend to anyone else to do the same when they get tired ,because it ain't much fun!!!!!!

I've had some funny injuries like that. A while ago I felt something in my back slip while Shrugging and it completely paralysed me. I struggled to breath and thought I had punctured a lung. I still get the odd sharp pain in my side, I wonder if it's an old Rugby injury that training just aggrevates. Hard to know

It paralysed you??? For how long? Fark that would freak me out!!

Well paralysed me like a broken rib would. I could still walk just not twist my upper body or move my arms without it hurting. Feeling like I couldn't breath was the worst part. Should really get an x-ray at some point just to be sure...

Oh the pain lasted a few days but the breathing got better in a couple hours

Maybe you should get a xray though

Bit of a Tom Boy Peachy? Wouldn't have picked it based on your avatar and the fact you did ballet  Most girls would react a lot worse than what you did after flying off a bike in to a paddock! Your a toughy by sounds of things  . I can't afford to a pay a doctor to take an x-ray, I feel fine at the moment so I will just keep at it and hopefully it won't happen again :)

I pinched what I thought was my large intestine during a standing barbell shoulder press with my weight belt on too tight. The pain it caused was enough to make me stop and go home. But I was contemplating a hospital visit for a while there.

The pain persisted (but lessened) over a few days and I had to stop workouts for about a week.

It just shows you shit can happen and when you do get some sort of acute injury, it may be wise to back off as continuing training adds additional stress to the CNS which is already in hard at work trying to repair the injury.

We're not bullet proof at all. Most of us have learnt that by the time we leave our teens.

I would recomend a full week off training every 8-10 weeks to prevent this.

If you're injured or overtrained, your obviously not going to gain strength or grow during that time. So take the week off! - You'll be stronger, refreshed and you'll be itching to get back into lifting when the week is up.

Nahhh I'm a girly girl I just ride a dirt bike. And I would like to think I am tough but its just really hard to cry when you can't breathe

Well my fingers are crossed for you.......

Taking a full week off is probably not the option I'd run with, but the concept is good! Instead we plan 'Low Volume' weeks every 4th week, closer to competition it will often be every 3rd week. We also avoid 'bar on back' exercises (squats, GM's etc), Deadlifts and heavy (unsupported) rows during these weeks to let the lower back get a break from the beating it endures!

This article (Monitoring Training Status: The Finger Tap Test) is on EliteFTS at the moment; may be worth a read? It looks at impact of training on the CNS as a way of monitoring. http://www.elitefts.com/documents/finger_tap.htm

That was a very interesting read Nate. I've never paid my CNS the attention it deserves. Some days I feel really flat yet I still try lift bigger weights because I want to make myself grow as fast as possible. I can now see how a lightish day can actually improve future gains in the long run :)
