An extract on ZMA from ergo-log.

"Study: ZMA does not raise testosterone levels

ZMA has been tested a couple of times. In the first case ZMA came out tops, and the abstract of the study was distributed to much acclaim. That research was done by supplements manufacturer himself. The manufacturer first claimed that the study had been published in the prestigious Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, [www.bodyandfitness.com] but this was not the case. The research was published on the JEPonline website. [JEPonline, 3(4): 26-36, 2000.]

A few years later, Richard Kreider studied the effectiveness of ZMASS, a supplement containing ZMA and L-Dopa produced by Cytodyne. ZMASS did nothing. Almost nothing. [J Int Soc Sports Nutr. 2004 Dec 31;1(2):12-20.]

Meanwhile Victor Conte is doing very well thank you from the sales of ZMA, according to media reports. From the enquiry into the Balco affair we know that Conte gave athletes his invisible designer steroids on condition that they openly sung ZMA’s praises. This is how Marion Jones won her medals in the 2000 Olympics.

The Germans do have some good news about ZMA as well though. The supplement scarcely raises zinc levels in the body. The athletes excreted nearly all the extra zinc in their urine. ZMA users also urinated more – which explains why some ZMA users think that the stuff makes them ‘drier’. They dehydrate."

As for what you were saying with increasing 'test levels', from what seems to be another myth, a lot of bodybuilders have lower than normal test levels due to their workout volume/intensity apparently...

I guess you have to just weigh it up - I always keep in mind how amazing the human body can adapt to things > so whilst I could suffer each time I increased the intensity and volume of my sessions, I'm pretty sure my bodies ability to process enough test naturally would stay pretty much intact. But the older you get the more this would be impacted, with natural test levels dropping. (I think I read somewhere that due to the age related drop in test levels you are more likely to contract prostate cancer - so could be all linked).

I think the article Agent just post up pretty much convinces me in the short term. If I was going to use the supplement regularly it would need to be for a more tangible result - e.g as musclenz has pointed out male fertility for one as it seems to have more of a tangible effect. And i already have two really good reasons why this is not required :) (just tucked them in  )

Muria puama

Muira puama is used mainly as a herbal remedy for erectile dysfunction and sexual dysfunction in women.

None of the compounds identified in muira puama have yet been found to support this use.

Preliminary animal studies suggest that muira puama is also a mild stimulant.

Dosage

A typical dose is 2 to 4 mg of muira puama liquid extract per day.

Safety

In one study, muira puama was found to cause significant inhibition of the cholinesterase enzyme. This can theoretically increase the risk of loss of muscle co-ordination and jerky movements due to acetylcholine buildup in muscles.

Placebo. all of those herbal pills ect. first time i took tribulus got real horny but it was my own mind mind rather than some crackpot herb from mexico.

Any benifit from these herbal test boosters is money wasted on a bang for buck basis. spend the same amount on real steriods or a fridge full of food.

Hmm, I started taking ZMA a couple of weeks ago (looks like I jumped the gun on that one eh?).

What I have noticed is that I have been sleeping way better - I know this isn't the same for everyone but for me thats quite a bit of benefit in and of itself.

Aside from that though, there doesn't seem to be alot of point in taking most supps other than whey protein (if you call that a supp) and creatine.

Any other supplements that you guys would reccomend that are generally regarded as actually doing something?

Interesting reading re arginine, sorry to dredge it up again. Just adding to the info posted more than anything else. In case people like reading and stuff :shifty:

Forms of L-Arginine That Do Not Cross The Blood-Brain-Barrier

Unacceptable L-Arginine Formulas

Bascially if it doesn't cross the BBB you're wasting your money. And the problem with most formulations is that they contain antagonists or are in a form that won't cross the BBB. Timing is also critical for crossing the BBB.

I have some info re ZMA but am out of time so will post tomorrow.

i did novadex and zma for a month, and took bloods before and after. the results speak for themselves. i posted it in a thread in steroid section, look it up if interested.

if anyone thinks they can get better results that i had (proven with tests), please advise!!

Sure was a good result sfs. Something was certainly working. I'm not a great fan on ZMA but I do feel there is often a need to look at zinc supplementation & with a good natty test booster like novadex, you can get a reasonable result.

Another way of looking at increasing your test levels is to reduce the estrogen/testosterone ratio by using an AI like Letrozole or even an OTC like 6OXO extreme (sort of similar to novadex) can work.
