Competition Day makeup

I just watched the videoclip posted on emmzies journal about Carla. Anyway I was blown away by the makeup she was wearing and realised that it is the one thing that I really haven't put any thought into yet.

It will be my first competition in Wanganui this year, and I would love to get my face made up nicely.

Is there anyone that I could contact regarding makeup? I know I could hire just any makeup artist but I suspect Bodybuilding makeup differs abit from the norm?

Any advice would be great.

I think you would need stage makeup for sure. I don't know much about bodybuilding makeup but when I was a ballet dancer the makeup we had for shows was really dramatic because the lights on stage are really harsh. If you only do one thing then make sure its wearing false eyelashes. They make such a difference and you want the biggest thickest ones you can find. They are a bitch to put on though

for foundation get a small pot of 'Tahitian' foundation from http://www.minifies.co.nz .

For the best stuff though, get your hands on some Jan Tana foundation available through bodybuilding.com. I lent my JT to a couple of people at the Waikato Nabba Show (males & females) and they loved it! It blends perfectly and as it is made for the stage wont slide off under the lights.

I've done my own make up for competitions and also had my make up done for me - it's heaps less stressfull on the day to have someone else do it. If you are planning on doing your own, have a few practise runs and take photos. You can also search makeup tips on YOUTUBE. I've copied this text from Jo Stewarts Website, full of helpful tips:

Contest Make-up by Teresa Penfold - My Extraordinary Make up Artist

If you are a new female competitor in the world of Body Building, have I got a shock for you!

Nearly every rule you may know about make-up goes COMPLETELY out the window.

It doesn't matter what type of skin you have, what tone of skin you have or what colours you think you suit, none of the "normal" things about everyday make-up apply here!!!

If you are thinking about doing your own contest day face then here are a few things you need to have and to know.

Most of the time, when contest day arrives, normally you don't know whether you're on straight away or at the end of the day. To have your face prepared before applying your war paint is very important. Try to avoid moisturising your face for a day or so before your comp, if you cant handle that and NEED to have moisturiser on, try your very hardest not to put any on the night before. The foundation commonly used by the girls and the kind I use is a cream based foundation, meaning that it will stay on longer if the surface it has to stick to is not slippery - moisturised. The dryer your skin, the less oils will be on the surface and the more chance of having the foundation stay longer to your skin and avoiding streaking.

I find the best foundation to use is Ben Nye - FT9 Olive Amber.

I find that a large triangle sponge applicator is the best to apply this foundation. Start at your forehead and work your way down to the base of the neck. If you don't have your tan completed before you start you will need to go around and blend in the edges when done.

Don't be stingy when applying the foundation. You need your face to match the rest of your body. Start applying in a sweeping motion to the entire face. Do not forget your EARS and behind your neck - especially if you are wearing your hair up. When you have all your face covered go over again in a dapping motion to be rid of any streaking or uneven colour. If you have a dark enough lose powder you can set your foundation before starting with the rest.

EYEBROWS are always forgotten. Don't be afraid to go dark here. With the foundation being so dark if you do not accentuate your eyebrows they will be lost when on stage. Eyebrows are the framing for the rest of your face, guidelines for your eyes. A medium to dark brown eyebrow pencil (or if in a rush eyeliner pencil will do) is perfect for this. Follow your normal eyebrow shape, or if you don't like your eyebrows or don't have a normal brow shape, you can create them with your pencil.

EYE SHADOWS don't always have to match your bikini colour but it does give a nice constancy if it does. If your wearing black, then you can pick any colour you wish. Go for bright colours, pearls, shimmers, anything that will reflect with the light is always a good choice. Remember to blend different colours together and contour with a darker colour than your base colour. If going for browns, bronze, earth tones, don't be surprised if you don't see these at all when on stage. As your face is such a dark tan colour, these colours generally won't show up.

FALSE EYELASHES I have to say that False Eyelashes are an absolute MUST! You can buy them from most pharmacies, Farmers stores; little bits and bobs stores and even some supermarkets. You don't want to go too over the top, to the point where it makes your eyes look half closed but a nice, dark, tidy set will do a perfect job. You can get some pairs that have sparkly pretty stones attached to them!! If looked after, your lashes can last up to 4 shows but you will need to remove any glue left over from the last use. The glue that comes with most of them is very good, but you can purchase a large tube of eyelash glue from some pharmacies or if you really want to go all out MAC has fantastic eyelashes and glue.

EYELINER most of the time is black. With that in mind, you don't always have to go with black. Any darker colour if it matches will be ok. Black is the universal eyeliner colour for anyone. If you want the smokey seductive look, try using a good black eye shadow for your lower liner. Also you can use a white eyeliner pencil on the inner rim of your lower eye (where the skin meets the eyeball) this gives your eye the appearance of being wider. Liquid liner for your top liner - above your false lash line is always good, although you may decide that you don't want to use a top liner as the lashes do a good job of that on their own.

Most blushes doesn't really show up, but if you have a dark blush you can use this as contouring below your cheek bones and use a shimmer powder on your cheekbones. You don't want to go over board with the shimmer though; you may end up super twinkling under the stage lights. A little goes a long way with shimmer powders.

LIPS always tend to be in the Red Colour Family. Not a lot of other colours show up well with the rest of the face. Really deep reds and purples show up great. Lipsticks that have a slight shimmer in them (as long as they are dark) are a nice touch, but again, you don't want to go mad with them. Pinks, and many other lighter colours may get lost on stage. Stick to deep rich colours. Gloss over this gives a lovely lush look.

Tools of the Trade

The basic tools you need to achieve the look are very important.

Chosen Foundation

A good, new triangle sponge applicator

Med/Dark Brown Eyebrow Pencil

A good variety of eye shadows

Eye shadow brush (2 would be better - 1 for applying, 1 for blending)

Set of False Eyelashes with glue

Eyeliner brush, a flat or angled brush if using eye shadow or an eyeliner pencil with a smudger

Lip liner and lipstick with application brush (brush not necessary, but it is nice to use)

If all you have are these basic things then you are well on your way to creating an awesome look to complete your perfect package.

PS: DON'T FORGET ABOUT YOUR HAIR!!!

Friends of mine got together and got a group rate for the 3 of us to have our make up and hair done, was cheaper and we all had fun getting ready together and it was 1 less thing to have to worry about.

But as long as you practice and have everything laid out ready on the day, it's easy to do your own, or even better have a friend do it if you trust them. Just make sure to compliment your face colour and body colour - it's really distracting to see a white face on top of a heavily tanned body.

Just bumping up this thread.

If you're in the BOP/Tauranga and want professional makeup on location/mobile, hit me up for a group deal as I am one of those makeup artist who offer a small discount for a group of 3 or more people.

My style is naturally glamourous makeup with a hint of high fashion, so I'm all for making you stand out on stage. I invite you BB girls to visit my website if you want to know more: http://www.abeautifuleducation.co.nz

Haha, even Rodney Hide admitted to enjoying the look of eyeliner when he wore it (and other makeup I'm sure) on Dancing with the Stars, so no I won't turn away any guys who want a bronzed face/stronger cheekbones, defined eyes etc - all things you can sneakily achieve with makeup.
