Strongman Training Session

Hey all,

We are having a Strongman Training Session at Mitre 10 Mega (Napier) on Saturday at 2.00pm. We are doing the Truck Pull, Hercules Hold, Steel Log Press and Farmers Walk.

If you're keen to try out the implements, get a few tips, or even just come for a look, feel free.

Nickoli (2008 NZ Strongest Man) and Heavy Duty Magele (195kg of Pressing Machine!) will be there, so I'm expecting some big weights & fast times with the toys! I'm still trying to convice Big Mac to come down for a train!

Sounds awesome..let us know if you do one up Aucks way!

Yeah I second that!

I've always been a fan of strongman since watching Jeff Capes as a kid and pulling my grans mini up the road when I was 8. :pfft: I would've loved to have gotten into all that if I hadn't wasted my youth lifting beer bottles instead of atlas stones :shifty:

Any plans for something like this in Auckland anytime soon?

We do this stuff every weekend as we own a bunch of equipment now. Just happens we're training in town this weekend so thought we'd open it up to anyone who's keen.

Justin and the AUT guys could do this (and probably do hold open training sessions). They will hold the Oz Strongman "DeadLog" comp soon, involves a Deadlift for reps & max weight and the same for Steel Log. Would be worth checking out?

Matt Rossiter runs the Highland Games (doubling as NZ Strongest Man after cancellation of Big Boys Toys 2009) which will definately be worth watching (Nov 28).

Would be real cool if someone could record this and post it up somewhere.

I love watching the Met-Rx Worlds Strongest Man Competition. Mariusz Pudzianowski has to be my favourite.

Yeah Pudz is all class, however Derek Poundstone and Zydrunas Savickas will push him really hard this year (Poundstone's probably the favorite going into 2009 WSM).

Will video the session for sure, haven't worked out how to post youtube videos here (will do soon!) but here's some footage of the boys training & me at Sydney's Strongest Man.

Weights will get heavier as we move closer to the NZ Strongest Man & The Oz Strongman Nationals, hopefully get some good videos up.

PS - Worth entering the Oz Strongman Deadlog comp in Akld if you're considering strongman - will post details later.

Heavy Duty has pressed 195kgs?!!  Insane in the membrane.

LOL - no! He weighs 195kg!

He's only been lifting seriously for a few months, prior to that he had a year or so training with little help / knowledge. His best bench is 210 with no real PLing technique, I'd say he'll go 230+ raw in the next few months. He presses 142.5 on the Steel Log in the most recent video - if he sorts the clean out he'll have a crack at the NZL record (157.5) this year. He may also be a future contender for squat records - did 300 raw easily with about 3 months training in the squat, mind you I expected it as his thigh measurement is 1 metre!
