fasted cardio ?

On the rare occasions I do cardio, it's generally fasted - or at least, carb-fasted. By that I mean if it's not pre-breakfast, I might taper off my carbs in the meals beforehand. I'll still keep the protein content in the meal, though. If it's pre-brekkie, I'll have half a protein shake for the aminos.

I read that cardio is most effective for fat burning first thing in the morning before food (though this seems to be a topic of much debate). The idea is that there is no food energy so your body uses your fat stores? So I got up one Saturday morning and thought I'd bust a whole workout. 15 minutes cardio then weights, I could feel my body giving out through the weights but kept myself going. I was absolutely wasted for the rest of the day. Was this incredibly stupid, or maybe just because I'm not used to working out in the morning? Would a simple 15 minute skip before brekky suffice for a fat burning dose (followed by usual gym after work)??

No good doing cardio before weights....thats why you were wasted. Best to do weights first then cardio or cardio in the morning then weights in the evening.

You may well get a better pump and more intense workout if you get your heart rate up with 5 min cardio warmup before hand. Cardio after weight training is ok if only a very short amount otherwise your body will use any nice new muscle tissue as energy as oppose to fat. Look at fat like a last resort stored fuel.

Cardio first thing in the morning before food will burn fatty acids that were released through your nights sleep. Otherwise they go back to storage.

Also Glutamine suppliment will assist recovery and help stop your body using hard earned muscle as energy.

Thats my five cents worth. You dont get much for 5 cents do you!

You don't build new muscle in the gym during your workout. Doing cardio after weights isn't going to catabolise any 'new muscle' that you just worked. However, extra cardio after lifting MAY affect your future gains.

Cardio after weights is ALRIGHT, but MY five cents worth is that if you can do serious cardio after weights, your weight training wasn't hard enough.

I like to do cardio on my off days from lifting, either interval training or steady state.

If you're looking to burn extra calories the day you do weights without it affecting your gains then look into walking, or some other form of NEPA (non-exercise physical activitiy)

juju is right about you arent burning new muscle

also theres 2 trains of thought over fasted cardio sure you will be able to burn fat as your body is looking to eat into energy stores after a good nights sleep and no food but there is a danger you are in a catabolic state and believe you could have a greater risk of burning more muscle tissue after so long with no food intake.

its a personal choice but it makes no sence to go 3 hourly protien feeds from 7 am till 11pm then wake up after 7 or 8 hrs sleep and proceed to work out cardio wise without feeding your muscles.

just my 5 cents worth

I don't advocate fasted cardio nor do I agree with having a small meal before cardio (protein shake, carbs etc) in the morning as there is so much research backing up both theories. I guess if you find out what works for you stick with it

An ex girlfriend of mine had her stomach stapled,i didn't think size,14 was big but anyhow she wanted it done ....so whilst in hospital I had a quick chat with her weight loss surgeon and asked him wether she will lose muscle due to the small amount of food she can only consume.....his reply was the body will convert the fat reserves into fuel not the muscle as many people claim....the body only use muscle as a last resort when there is insuffient fat cells(low single figure body fat)... Anyway I tend to believe him as he is an expert in this field.

Body converts carbs into glucose. Glucose and fat burn together as a dual fuel for exercise. In the absence of glucose (no/low carb) the body can convert amino acids into glucose - a by product of this function is the production of ketones - body can use ketones as a safety for essential functions in times when the body is starved of ready glucose.

As the production of ketones is a secondary function it requires more energy and time to occur.

So your body will only use actual "muscle" if;

1. You are eating well below dietary requirement

2. You are eating very little carbohydrates <10-20g depending on b/weight

3. You are not compensating for the absence of carbohydrates by elevating your protein intake accordingly so that there is an excess the body can use to convert to glucose.

There is a lot more to it than this but from a nutritional influence point of view that's the basics. (hydration, hormone, rest, stress etc are also factors but not limited to).

depends on a lot of factors but yes in general you are right - although once you are fully depleted it is easy enough to drop into ketosis quicker ... (lean body mass key factor - bigger you are more glucose you can hold in muscle)

For me it takes on average 9 days of no carbs after a normal balanced intake and then after that 2 days after a cheat day.

Go and talk a few people who have had stomach stapling...the guy in the needle exchange just off K'Rd had his done. Have known him since he was 160kg+ and he's now 105kg and dropping.

Surgeon has him on many small high protein meals to retain his muscle mass while he is on less calories than his large body would like.

Anyway, this guy looks so different from before and open honest guy to talk too as well...if you're in the area....

Just making sure as there has been a lot of mention about eating into ones muscle :P Even when fasting you dont need to worry about this :)

OP: Just do it and see if it works :) I do all of my training fasted, and smash 3000 calories after gym at night

What a difference it makes!personally Im a fan of fasted cardio, pissing ketones hard for months lol....just using 1mg test a week and I'm losing fat and gaining strength so far......aas help them catabolic affect even at these low dosage.....

I am doing fasted cardio three times  a week while I am dieting down for my comps and I like it plus it.It is a great way to start my day by going for a half a hour power walk since I live in a hilly area in Dunedin, when my alram goes off a six am I think this is what I need to do  with my Ipod fully charged as well.
