the art of the barbell row

Recommended Posts

i just wanted to throw this out there - have recently added this to lats day, i use palms up grip. My question is - there are alot of variations with form, im comfortable with the 'body angle' aspect of the move, its more what correct execution of the movement. I do them slow, zero momentum, controlled negative. but almost all of the 'youtube' examples have guys doing them reasonably fast (albeit some good weights).

which is more beneficial? the slow, controlled one, or the faster, short R.O.M move? some examples of what i mean..

to me this is bad form, momentum used..??

i like this better, though i squeeze at the top, and have a little more body angle.

i liked this, pretty good form yes?

so why does everyone do these???.....

is is more effective to do a heavier weight and let a little momentum happen, or use alot less weight and pause at the top for a squeeze????

I think both methods have value personally. I have times when I go for explosive lifts and times when I pace it out long and slow with a hold at the top, it's how I interpret the theory of tricking your muscles. :?

obviously weight for weight slow and hold is gonna put more strain on them, but if you can change the weight up for the quicker movement then surley your gonna be working extra short twitch muscle fibres???

by no means do I really know what I'm talking about anymore than just a bit of online reading, so would be just as interested to hear peoples opinions and views on this subject too.

For now I'm gonna keep mixing it up as as it seems to be working for me

ps, just watched those vids, that first guy was practically jumping with momentum! :pfft: second looked good but yeah i agree he probably needed more body angle imo, 3rd guy i've seen before when surfing utube and he seems to have great form in most things.

4th guy (edited- got my vids mixed up)....this is okay to me for "mixing it up"

  • 1 month later...

I like the 3rd video as well.

I have also recently included these in my workout. i do them slow as well with palms facing up and elbows close to the body. This way i feel like i can squeeze at the top better. Not sure if its right though.

Also wondering about the hands placement on the bar. Is it better to have them little wider or closer to the body?

Thanks.

This is a good read.

He makes good points re form and the point of the Pendlay Row, and notes at the end his take on the differences between Pendlay and Barbell Rows...

"So what’s the difference between the Barbell Row & Glenn Pendlay’s variation the Pendlay Row?

Powerful contraction of the upper-back when pulling the weight up.

High bar speed because of the upper-back arching."
