Recommended Posts

I would like to find a training partner current singles

Bench 140kg

Squat 190kg

Deadlift 230kg

If someone is around those marks or better and would like a training partner that would be great, training westside barbell styles at present and would like to stay on those lines thanks

Go to Nationals this weekend at Auckland uni, I'm sure you'll make some contacts there.

Hi Viking, you dont train at club physical in albany do you?

Yes I am training there at present, but I went to powerlifting nationals today, Auckland Uni gym might be better for my interests in the future

They have bands and chains there, as I like westsides style of training and want to do more of it a guy named Rod Newman showed me around today between peoples lifts very helpful guy it seems more suited for powerlifting but I won't be able to join till after christmas more than likey

Hi Viking,

Pretty big shoes to live up to in the avatar! Jon Pall remains one of my all time favorite WSM competitors.

Back to PLing in Akld. Bands & Chains are cheap (get second hand industrial chains - I got 50 odd metres free from the freezing works!), good training environments are harder to come by (unless you live in Wgtn and have PowerHouse! ).

Giles Ave (despite being a bit archaic) has bred a ton of PLing & Oly champions, and would be a good bet.

Wookie (Pro Strongman & 2007 NZ Strongest Man, Commonwealth PLing Record Holder), Simon Weaver (Multi NZ PLing title holder) & Nickoli (Pro Strongman & 2008 NZ Strongest Man, Former PLing National Champ & record holder) all train there, as do a number of good PLers & Olympic Lifters. They're all really friendly guys and help others out, Gillies is dirt cheap as well!!

Hope this helps.

Nate

Thanks Nate,

Jon Pall is the greatest in my eyes so much power and energy you can't find that today in champs he is priceless to watch - the King of Kings.

Gilles ave is there always someone there so you can get in? It says 24hr but with card access I have found the address now I will check it out thanks :D

You are lucky about the chains good stuff

No there is not allways someone there, but I think once you join they give you a key. Another place you could look at is "Get Strength" in onehunga. They are a true strength gym that is run by top powerlifters. They have alot of unique power training equipment as well that know where else has, thick bars, weighted sleds reverse hyper machines etc. (hey by the way im the personal trainer at albany that trains phill the 50 year old bodybuilder)

Getstrength is a closed shop now from what I hear? No longer taking memberships or open to the general public. My old training partner wanted to join (the one who is a Pro Strongman & 2008 NZ Strongest Man, Former PLing National Champ & record holder) and couldn't get in! :pfft:

Maybe ring Thommo at GS direct and confirm???

Anyway with the topic being "Who's Powerlifting Hard Out In Auckland" I thought I'd better say "This guy is"!

Honestly, if you want to train Westside, then Gillies probably isn't the place for you, unless you get your own bands and chains etc. It's basically a place if you just want to do the basic lifts and the only machines you use are a lat pull and a leg press. If you come in on Thursday between 5:30 and 7pm, Simon, Nick and myself will be there. It's at 99 Gillies ave at the traffic lights, the gym is the big shed at the end of the car park next to the badminton hall.

Hi Man,

Good stuff I remember you telling me about this place I will have a look, I have been in touch with Sam from Auckland Uni also,

may be hook up with him in dec if this back is better by then, in the mean time full steam ahead for the next 12 weeks at albany then 1st comp.

my options after that maybe might be have a heavy training day at one of the three places mention here Gilles ave , auckland uni or get strength and do speed work at albany seems like Auckland Uni might be the way to go at present.

Hi

yeah strong guy i went and watched this event on sunday but i missed his squats as i had to work in morning and I only got there to see rubens squat his last attempt can't remember weight but it was up there great to witness, I stayed and watched the bench and deadlifts great show,as this was my first comp to watch at a powerlifting event it seemed to lack atmosphere i guess i was expecting more yelling more hype ups and louder music etc just like what you see in the states on you tube to leave something in your memory
