Why not to buy "bulking" powders

I buy 10lb of Inner Armour Super Quad for $159.00 - wouldn't that work out to be the cheapest? (I know it's not a bulking powder, but use as a base if you were going to make your own bulking powder).

Eatme whey would still be the better deal at the current sale price. The Super Quad works out to just over $35/kg and the eatme whey at just over $36/kg. Eatme would be the better bargain though because it's 80% protein while the Super Quad is only about 68%

It looks like you can actually get 10lbs of the Inner Armour powder for $157 from Shotgun Supps, which is an even better deal.

I've added that price and the macro-nutrient profile to my spread sheet, as highlighted in pink below.

You can see that, per serve and per gram of protein, the Inner Armour product is actually very competitive, although it is nudged out by the current Eat Me price for their whey concentrate.

The Inner Armour stuff seems to have a very similar macro profile to PVL Whey Maxx, which is also one of the cheaper protein options. Together with Musashi P40 and Horleys Crossfire Protein, they look kind of like a cross between a mass gainer and a pure whey. Presumably they have cheaper proteins and carbs to bulk them out...

How do you find its taste, mixability, etc, RockHard?

Nice work on your spreadsheet. Funny that for an extra 550g and $12, the Super Quad gives you 3 less servings or 80 grams less protein. I'd stick to the eatme, that is unless the Super Quad tastes heaps better, because the cheaper deal is only better if you want to actually eat it!

Since you seem to be using the 4 KG size of eatme because it is the cheapest, possibly it would be more fair to use the 10 LB size of WheyMaxx.

This is available from shotgun supps for $178

This would bring the price down to around 0.055

(Yes i know that eat me is still cheaper)

Personally, I have found that PVL Whey Maxx triple chocolate is the best tasting protein powder I have tried (Not including mass gainers)

And if you were looking at make your own powder, possibly you could look at the fonterra unflavoured stuff?

I just came across one more even cheaper (of course, the more you buy the cheaper things tend to get).

Bioplex whey from Xtreme Nutrition - 10kg for $280

http://www.xtremenutrition.co.nz/shop/p ... 00whey22lb

That has to be about the cheapest flavoured, pre-packaged protein around. $100 less than even eatme's 10kg price. Outside of this you'd have to get the Fonterra stuff I guess.

That's the link for it's nutritional profile in case your interested. They don't provide it on their site. Care to compute MM? :P

Yeah, I'm unaware of many people having any luck buying directly from Fonterra. Have a look through the past topics on this Diet/Nutrition section, most people used to get it through Davis Trading although there have been a few other people with access and selling through this site also.

Geez, I didn't realise this was going to turn into a full-time job!

:D

Anyway, I've updated the PVL Whey Maxx price for the 10lb bag and, although it's a better price, it still doesn't beat the Eat Me.

And I added in the 22lb bag of Bioplex 100% Whey and... we have a new winnar!!!

At 84c per serve and less than 4c per gram of protein, buying the Bioplex in bulk certainly gets you the cheapest return for your dollar so far.

Of course, whether you want to pony up $280 at a time for your protein purchase and, how well 22lb will keep once opened might factor into your purchasing decision.

As will taste, mixability, and the actual quality of the ingredients used. Can anyone comment on Bioplex in regard to these?

I think that $280 for 22lb (or nearly 10kg) of powder is probably at the high end of purchases that all but the fringe (the elite, massive, or rich) are going to be buying, so I suggest that be the limit for this table... otherwise you guys are going to start quoting by the tonne on the wholesale markets.

Quick question - does someone from eatme or perhaps some of you eatme fans want to explain how they have a flavoured and sweetened WPC that is 80.1% protein when the unflavoured wpc coming out of fonterra is only approx 80% protein? Are we going by dry basis % or is it an imported wpc? The wpi seems to be a NZ whey however no mention of the WPC being from NZ.

That's a good question, Flex. While not being from eatme, a fan, or even having used it, I'd have thought their finished product would have a few percent less than the raw protein after adding flavours, sweeteners, and lecithin.

They do seem to claim their product is NZ made on their front page which I assume would apply to both WPC and WPI.

I'm also quite curious to see if someone can answer this.

Bioplex is awsome. I would not hesitate to use this protien.

Have tried the chocolate and the vanilla. The chocolate one was nice, good taste, the vanilla was great, but on taste the vanilla lags behind other vanilla's like twinlabs.

The chocolate one tastes great, mixes well, and awsome value for money. I feel its one of the better protiens going from results, and someone once told me Bioplex gets the whey, takes what they want from it and sells the rest of the whey on to muscletech etc etc etc other company's.

Leading brand, just not the massive hype and advertising, hence probably providing a quality product and a cheeper price. And, at that price its well worth the outlay.

Nice Intro, I'm also no fan of bulking powders - carbs are cheap, and you get to manipulate adding high and low GI as you see fit or fat and no carbs.

Morning shake: 3 large bananas, 500ml milk, 50g whey, ice -> makes a good smoothie with breakfast.

Late night: 50g whey, few table spoons peanut butter, milk, instant coffee.

Any good quality whey protein, or you can use isolate if thats your choice, used to form the protein content of a meal replacement, together with Bain's suggestion is a cost effective way of producing a cheap & sugar free alternative to Mass Gainers. I use less banana & a cup of raw oats & /or frozen berries to vary this very simple method of getting in your bulking calories in a good slow release form. There are a few Gainers & Time Release Proteins that use casein & egg protein. Does anyone use these in their own concoctions & in what form do you purchase them?

I love it - one of the best protein powders I have tried and I have kept to this one for some time now. Best tasting protein powder IMO is the Mutant Mass - but I'm not bulking! :)

Great first post. Interesting read. I have been taking Myogenics Ultimate Anabolic. $140 for 28 serves. Not sure if it is doing anything but it tastes good lol..

4L of skim milk a day and eating like a hungry man possesed has given my ecto frame 8kg in 10 weeks.

I definately think it is the milk though that has made the changes. Till now I have never been able to put on weight. The extra easy to drink calories really help. When I finish tis tub of Anabolic I will simply get a good Whey Isolate and use it for post workout 1000cal shake.

Can't rememeber all the ingredients cos I have made one in six months due to no blender here in the lovely world of Dili.

500ml skim milk, 1 banana, 1 apple, tablespoon peanut butter, cup of oats, 2 x yoghurt, 2 scoops whey.. or something close to that...

Before I came over here I was having one of these within half an hour of bed aswell. Never wake hungry so it seems to do the job during sleep.

But seriously, I have milk to put the weight on easily with a balance of real food. My wieght gain seems fairly clean too as I am more defined than I was 6 months ago 8kg lighter..

If making your own "Bulking Powder" or wanting to enhance the one you are using, see if you can track down some Fenugreek Seed extracts- in particular 4-Hydroxyisoleucine amino acid. EAS made a product called Insuload about 5 years ago that contained potent extracts of this (Smelt like maple syrup), but as they exited targeting the Bodybulding market, it was discontinued.

What does it do?

http://herbal-powers.com/fenugreek.html

In Short-

Drives more carbs into muscles and away from fat- crucial when taking in heavy carb meals when bulking so you more likely feed and grow muscle, not your fat stores.

Longer version-

Essentially it has a direct, stimulating effect on insulin production for those who wish to increase their glucose metabolism and helps to reduce glucose resistance and the uptake of glucose, thereby reducing overall blood glucose levels.
