Well this is going to be another interesting poll to see what people believe there idea of a 'BODYBUILDER' is.

i know i still feel silly telling people im a bodybuilder even though ive competed ,as alot of the general puplic seam to put just associate bodybuilders with the big guys (pro's)

so lets see what u think, is it sum1 that just throws weights around a cuple of times a wk or someone that cutts and bulks or sum1 that competes in the shows?

is it some one that just has there heart in the sport or sum1 that has experienced the hi's and low's, in's and out's of a competitors lifestyle etc?

you can drive trucks all day but your not a trucker unless your getting paid for it :P

good point, so what your saying is your not a bodybuilder unless your a pro whos getting paid for it ? thats true, but i think a bodybuilder is anyone whos willing to live the lifestyle, training and dieting consistantly in order to build there body.... dont have to compete to be a bodybuilder.

I agree. Bodybuilding is what it says. I think the term 'Bodybuilder' is one that has been 'mediasised' (I know thats not a word....but you get my drift) to include only those that get up on stage and compete and look like the Muscle and Fitness dudes.

IMHO those that live the lifestyle and aspire to the goal should fit within that description. If you applied the 'though must compete to be called a bodybuilder' rationale then everyone who has ever ridden a horse and practiced dressage should not be able to call themselves a dressage rider, if they don't compete, OK not the best analogy, but IMO the same.

Unless you have competed it sounds weird calling you a bodybuilder. Just my opinion. How's Skitzophrenia going for you Luigi?

true, but i know people who have competed and dont even resemble a bodybuilder :pfft:

I agree, if your not huge then you might feel a bit nervous saying your a bodybuilder out loud.

....not sure if that makes sense.

You can be a swimmer, runner, etc without neccessarily having competed.

Are you saying you cant be a bodybuilder until that first comp has been completed.

i personally felt that as soon as i had competed sumthing switched in my mind to feeling/labeling myself more like a bb ,as u have then done everything there is to do (in the eyes of gereral public/media) ie, the bulking, cutting, dehydrating, tanning, being on stage etc

....you should also include; someone who is training with the intention of competing but has yet to compete. I believe that would also include a significant percentage.

done!! but it wiped every1s votes so vote again :)

....I know guys who keep with diet and train specificaly for bodybuilding..not strength training or fitness training...but pure bodybuilding..they arent even interested in competing on stage. Admittedly..if these guys ever chose to compete..I reckon they would wipe the floor of a lot of competing bodybuilders

Well done!.....mind you I agree with Luigi as well!.

We can all recall a few alleged "competitors" who have fronted up to various regionals with a can of nugget and a pair of crusty old speedos well obscured by their winter flab hoping like hell less than three front up in their class. They should be taken outside and beaten up in the carpark for wasting 90 seconds of everyones time (including their own).

To me it means anyone who is training to improve their body. thats it! I know this might sound like it takes something away from you fellas competing out there being linked with guys who just aint there yet or who may never get there. But that just makes you better bodybuilders.

I probably aint ever gonna compete, or be able to truth be told, but I'm eating 5-6 meals a day, taking extra protien and working out every day I can to a set plan. I think I'm a bodybuilder?

Yeah, I know a few guys who fall into this category. I'm one of them. I train 4 days a week. I keep to a strict diet all week, apart from weekends where I have cheat meals. I have no interest in competing on a stage. My buzz is just to keep growing and growing and growing......

I consider myself as much a bodybuilder as the guy next to me who just entered a show or the natural guy across the room training. Look at the name of our sport 'bodybuilding', Says it all.

My opinion is..........If you havnt competed your not a bodybuilder.

Some may disagree but thats my thoughts on it.

Anyone can say they lift weights everyday and eat well

lol..yeah..anyone can say they have competed on stage too.

:naughty: not really, it takes alota balls to get up on stage and that can tend to be a fair % of peoples reasons for not getting up there.

sure there are sum that dont look as gud as others up there but hey, if u go to the gym and train/diet that hard, y not show off ur efforts to a crowd that wants to c it.

And y should peeps show off their efforts? What ever happen to allowing peeps who just love to train and build up their bodies? Most of these guys who do bodybuild and dont compete invest a lot of time and supplements in themselves for their own benefit...not for others...

Tough question, as I kind of agree with all of the points of view people have expressed to some extent - on the one hand, I'm like nemisis said, with the exception of the last sentence:

To me it means anyone who is training to improve their body. thats it! I know this might sound like it takes something away from you fellas competing out there being linked with guys who just aint there yet or who may never get there. But that just makes you better bodybuilders.

Maybe it's because I'm new to this type of training, but I don't feel anywhere near ready to call myself a bodybuilder at this point, and as I'm unsure whether competing is ever going to be in my future, then will I ever feel ready to call myself one?

But on the other hand, I still feel like I'm dedicating myself more towards a certain type of training with clear goals than I was before, when I was just going to the gym and doing classes or cross trainer but with no defined goals.

To put it another way, if I was in a job interview and asked to talk about what I enjoy doing outside of work, saying I enjoy going to the gym just sounds crap and doesn't express just how serious I am about it. But saying I'm a bodybuilder also seems like I'm embellishing the truth a bit more than I should! In some ways saying you're a BBer almost implies that you compete - if I said I was a BBer I'd expect a question about competing to follow.

I'd say that personally I'm more of a wannabe. But I don't know if I agree that competing/intending to compete has to be a defining factor. Like someone else said, it takes a lot of balls to do that, and it's not for everyone.

Tough question, and I'm overthinking it!

Totally agree. You can be either a Recreational Bodybuilder (for want of a better word) or a Competitive Bodybuilder. Either way you are pushing your body to its genetic potential & beyond. Some Non Competing BBers do this even harder than those Competing. I guess though you can only claim fame as a Competitive BBer & if you hold a few trophies in the cabinet. I expect most on here who have got somewhere towards achieving the BBer "look" have been asked on occasion if "they compete". Well then at least you are being recognised as having a fairly large muscular mass. I also think peoples perception of a BBer is relative to the amount of lean muscle mass you hold on your frame year round.

tru, but i dnt know many guys that dont appricate a compliment on there size/shape and wot better way to show ur tru progress in its best conditioning and lighting than on stage.

.... Well their is a simple solution to this. On one hand you have competitive bodybuilders, and on the other, non-competitive bodybuilders.

 so now wot do u class the non-competitive bodybuilders as outa the poll options??
