Is Salmon as good as Tuna?

downside more expensive? I think it has less mercury risk too. I could be wrong though.

Someone once told me canned salmon was nice, I tried it, it was not. Ew ew ew. WHy does it have bones in there?!

Yeah i've heard it has less mercury too...

I'm not a big fan of the bones, i normally remove them as best i can. Oh and the skin...... But apart from that its DELICIOUS! =P~ Except the John West brand which is always dry and nasty.

Canned salmon is a good choice, plenty of protein and while it is higher in fat it has heaps of the good Omega 3s that you want.

Depending on your goals you'll want to be taking account of the extra fat, but then again a big can still only has about 8 grams so not a big deal for many people.

Not sure I'd be happy to eat 3 cans of it every day though, that might be too much for me to stomach.

Mixing up your protein sources with chicken, meat, eggs, whey etc is ideal, but the convenience factor of something in a can is understandably appealing.

btw. keeping the bones adds calcium if that's something you're after

Wow, so the downside is just the fat? Thats awesome. Goodbye Tuna!

I don't eat three cans a day anyway so thats not a problem for me, but yeah i can totally understand where ya coming from. Don't think i could ever handle three cans of any fish, no matter what it was.....eekkk

Thanks for ya help :D

I wouldn't even really call it a downside, you're going to get fat from somewhere so it may as well be from the 'good fats' like those found in oily fish. You'd just factor it in like any food.

It has slightly less protein but nothing to stop you from choosing it over tuna if it's your preference. Comparable amounts of sodium and like Laura says, less mercury than tuna if that's a concern.

Just buy Fish Pills. I have some odourless vanilla flavoured ones. They are Mercury tested, cheap and have all the Omega 3 your after. That way you can enjoy the benefits of eating fish and stick to your favourite foods which are in my case, red meat and chicken :grin:

Oh and the reason Tuna have more Mercury in them is because they are deepwater fish, same applies to Swordfish etc.

Yup i take omega3 supplements as well as eating about a can of salmon a day. Hopefully they're doing something positive, preferably for the brain, i need all the help i can get in that area.

I guess the only real issue I have with the tuna is how Im eating it which is directly from the can - nothing added. Do you have any suggestions as to maybe adding things to it, preparing it or even cooking it??

Nooo, Eating it from the can is the worst! My suggestions:

- Mix it with low fat mayo or (low cal) sweet chili sauce

- Combine it with egg whites (or whole eggs if your that way inclined), grated zuccini, carrot and some garlic and fry it into large tuna fritter things.

Grr now i'm making myself hungry...stupid uni. :(

Salmon is superior. Nutritionally it pisses on tuna IMHO.

It's also lower in purines, if that's a concern for you (i.e. salmon is less acidic).

I eat two can's of salmon a day, and try for fresh at least one day a week.

Salmon = muscle food 8)

Tuna = snack food :pfft:

WHy does it have bones in there?!

I buy a boneless skinless one. Mash it with kumara and voila, it's no longer catfood :pfft:

I mix mine with chickpeas or 5 bean mix. Mashed up preferably so the chickpeas/beans don't run away all over the place. Yum!

fyi you can buy it from the salmon farms and it turns up by courier overnight.

the chilli box is a few bucks and courier 15 for up to 15kg i think....you can fit about 10kg of whole fish in 1 box

whole fish(gutted!) are $15/kg....so if your into buying bulk it is a lot cheaper than the supermarkets normal price

i cut them into steaks and there is waste of head and tail compared to buying from the shop......unless your into them to lol

:lol::lol::lol: I guess it just depends on what you're used to. I grew up eating tinned salmon, skin, bones and all - yum! But I can see how it would be gross if you'd had the good stuff first and then tried the tinned!

Off the top of my head its not relevant to its depth. Its because it (TUNA) is a predatory fish, where as salmon is not

Well Im gonna give tuna the flick now - thanks heaps for the feedback guys...I did try a bit of an experiment lastnight where by I fried up some onion, mushrooms, can of salmon, some eggs, tomatoes and some silver beet, and some kumera (pre boiled) and was actually not too bad...got some left overs for lunch today - work mates get a bit of a bee under the bonet with the smell of salmon in the office - this way it doesn't stink out the work place

If anyone moans about the stink of my salmon or tuna in the office, I remind them that their fish and chips and pies are pretty bloody smelly as well! So until pies and fish and chips and divine smelling curries are banned in the office, there's room for salmon and tuna as well.

I do mostly chop chop chicken, tuna is dry, although the smoked tuna in oil is nice. ChopChop reckons it's chicken is from Thailand, dunno what's wrong with the chickens here? Last time I was in Thailand the chickens were running around with the half dead looking dogs. OMG.
