Muscle/Mass loss when sick

groovy

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have only been training say 6months or so. and im not so big. (76kgs).

I was training till last friday den i got sick from sunday. So i stayed home because i couldnt go to gym and didnt want to make other people sick too.

Also i checked my weight this morning and i was 73kgs. (lots 3kg in total in 5days)

Could not eat as usual because of sickness but ate what i could. I havent been to gym yet and its almost a week off gym now.

I just noticed that my tits which already are tiny are now halved. My calf's used to be as feel hard with a bit of mass are now soft as anything and smaller.

Is this normal? All the hard work put in the gym for months and loose it so quickly because u got sick and didnt eat properly for a week.

sounds right to me ,first ly the sickness had a diuertic effect on you ,which means it must have got rid of a substantial amount of water from your body, secondly owing to the sickeness and low food intake it must have eaten some of your muscle mass, start by drinking water and lots of it,stock up on your carbs and protein and pray to god that muscle memory is not a myth.

get back into the game buddy ,youll gain it all back quicker than last time i promise.

I got really sick at the beginning of the year and lost close to 5kg in 1 week.

I simply could not eat or drink since it was an gastro-intesinal infection. It took about 6 weeks to get my weight back up. However...

When I've had a normal cold or flu, I found that eating and drinking (water with electrolytes) as much as I can stomach helps big time (excuse pun). I.e. minimal weight loss.

=iZ.

Thanks vracula and Inzane. I am still little sick well almost normal i say.

So eating and drinking as consistently. Muscle memory aye, maybe works for people who have training for a long time. But i doubt if i have any. :)

I just started, so no memory i think. :)

Maybe if im lucky. I will see in next few week or so, after starting training from monday.

Yeah, you probably have lost a bit of muscle, but I think the majority of the weight will simply be water. Can't remember quite how it works, but carbs pull water into your muscles, making them appear bigger and fully. Lose the carbs, and you'll lose the water, and your muscles will appear flat. But they'll soon puff back up once you start eating properly again.

i too think most of your loss will be water and you will loose a little muscle as well

after the first comp i did i came down with food poisoning a few days later. it was a dodgy chicken breast that laid me up for 5 days with severe cramps and unable to walk or eat much.

but i have to say after the 5 days i was looking better than ever having lost so much fluid although also loosing a little size.

ive heard of people getting on stage while still getting over stomach bugs and looking in amazing shape although too weak to do the posing etc.

keep up your fluid intake and up your eating as soon as you can

youll bounce back in no time.

just think of it as a positive as in your body has had a good rest and now ready to hit the weights again.

Know how you feel dude, I've been out close to 2 weeks because of a flu/operation combo. I have lost so much weight, my nutrition each day consists of a bowl of cereal and dinner - very depressing. This thread makes me feel a bit better though knowing other people have to deal with the same thing... I guess you just have to grit your teeth through it and then use the renewed enthusiasm to hit it hard when you start again :)

Last year I got influenza and was sick for a good month. Got a secondary chest infection the whole works. Lost about 7kgs, took me a couple months to get back on track.

This year I got another bad run of viruses but luckily managed to maintain most of my weight. Strength is still down but coming back rapidly.

Just gotta accept it I think.

I lost 6 kgs in June, after being sick for nearly 4 weeks. Flu, then tonsillitus... weak and sore. I have been back training for a month and have put it all back on plus and extra 1kg.

The determination to gain it back will be the best thing ever.

I ate more, trainined harder (after a week of taking it easy), drank more water, drank more protein...

awesome now.

  • 3 months later...

ahh...found a post on the subject... good ole NZBB...a wealth of info

currently crook as a dog..a sick dog that cant keep food down. going from 5000 cals a day down to 2 slices of dry bread, bottles of water and now my first shake in 24 hours is a major sux for me. Obviously feel like i have faded away to nothing   but hopefully over the next few days the worst is over for this stomach bug  and i can get back into it...short term downtime but bloody frustrating
