Sore forearms after curls etc!

Recommended Posts

Hello,

So i have had this increasingly bad pain in my forearms on the underside/pinky side of my forearms.

It started with curls, i would get a little bit of pain thinking maybe it's just the normal feeling you get when training certain muscle groups and didn't think much of it. But now when doing a set of curls with any bar, or bells i get a chronic ache that doesn't go away. Another thing is when i lift for example a 20kg dumbell and put it on the rack, as soon as i release the weight i get intense shooting pain through my forearms... I have stopped training for about a week now and the pain is going away.

I am told that when i was curling with a bar i was holding my hands to close which was stretching the muscles in the forearm. I now hold my hands further apart but it is allready past the point of being able to reduce the pain. For those that have had shin splints, this feels the same and in theory is the same principle (atleast from what i have worked out).

So who else has had this problem and how did you stomp out the pain, i hate the fact i can't train arms and the longer i stay away i feel more guilty.

I have got up to curling an easy bar with 20kg's either side (40kg's+bar). Is this to much weight? I can do 10 reps starting to fail on the last after 3 set's.

Thank you in advance.

Damian

Yep..I had that exact same problem during my earlier days of lifitng. I went lighter and changed my grip...I also used staps to help ease the tension on my grip....I didnt see a doc about it...it just eventually went away...

I did lift lighter and changed my grip but it was to late and the pain got incresingly worse. However, i have had a week off and the pain seems to have been reduced a lot but i won't know until train arms at the gym.

dont do curls then if something hurts stop it and find something else can you stilldo pulldowns/pullups

I have stopped doing what caused the pain however anything i lift that is heavier than 15kgs hurts. If i train any muscle group, just holding a heavy weight hurts. So it's a little beyond changing what i'm doing.

Hi,

You may have developed tendonitis. Check with your doctor first to be sure, but look here for info:

http://orthopedics.about.com/cs/sportsm ... onitis.htm

Good news is you can fix it; bad news is you've got to stop the excercises that have caused it, at least until its gone.

Thank you for that. It was a good read and i have been using voltaren Emugel (anti inflammatory) and not lifting anything for over a week now and feeling much better. I think i will have to go and see a specialist and completly stomp this out however.

Well the good news is, i went in training today. I have been resting for 10 days ( have been walking up/down hills and swimming in this time). And no pain! i trained Triceps and shoulders without a hitch, i'm gonna stop Biceps for another week and give it a go but i did do 3 sets of reverse BB curls to help strengthen my forearms and it was fantastic!

So i guess having a good rest and Emugel is the key.

I learnt pretty quickly about the tendonitis thing...stay away from skullcrushers  its a bastrd too cos they work good for me but i would be in agony after doing them and be useless for a few days afterwards. Stopped them and all seems pretty good in the elbow

I think everyone is different tbh, or has slightly different injuries. When I had this problem Skull Crushers were one of the things I could do without it hurting. Rather than not doing an exercise because someone says it's no good, go by feel. If it hurts clearly you shouldn't do it, if it feels fine go for it. Listening to your body applies to a lot of areas in bodybuilding

I dropped my wrists back so I wasn't bending them up when I was curling.

This helped me a lot and I don't get pain anymore.

Might not work for everyone though.

I guess if you were bending them upwards when curling it would contract your forearms a bit.

I have a similar problem with pains in my forearm, seems to be related to my grip, I only get it on the ez curl bar. I changed to olympic bar and it stopped. Anyone else had an issue with using the angled ez bar grip??

yeah i had a similar thing when curling heavy with bb, started with massive pump in the forearm which felt great ofcourse, but then developed into that same pain. i now just use db. i start my curl with hammerfist grip and twist at the top of the curl for supernation and complete contraction of bicep. works great and no more pain \:D/ still use the bar for overhand curls

(is it wierd to be able to lift as much overhand as underhand? when i started i couldn't lift at all overhand  but now...!)
