NZBB Reporters Wanted!

Are you going to a local competition? We want to hear about it.

We now have members all over New Zealand. No matter where the competition's held, there's a fair chance one of us will be there.

We'd love to know what the shows are like at the other end of the country. So if you plan on seeing one, take a camera and bring us back an exclusive!

Pseudo can we keep this thread alive as a sticky and post up events dates times venue charges etc before hand. I end up missing shows cause I never know when theyre on.

That's the plan, mate. We're going to rub your noses in the comps!

And I don't think it matters at all if we have several NZBB photographers at the same event. So if Ash wants to take photos as well as Tallulahangie, then great! The more, the merrier!

Scooter - it looks like the Christchurch Classic has been rescheduled for 27 May. I've updated our calendar here.

Incidentally, if you guys hear of changes in any event details, please let me know! I try to keep the calendar as accurate as I can, but I don't always find out about changes immediately. Your help would be most appreciated.

Personally, I think the truly discerning bodybuilder will go to the pre-judging. That's when you get the line-up and are able to do proper comparisons on all the poses.

As for photography tips, I think I've almost got it sussed now...

- Sit as close to the front as you can. When you need to use the zoom, it significantly cuts the amount of light getting into the camera, which makes photos more likely to be blurry and blotchy. Not too close though - you've got to be able to fit the line-up in one shot.

- If your camera has a manual focus, use that. Zoom in to a close-up on the middle competitor, pre-set the focus, and switch to manual.

- The colours on stage often confuse digital cameras. If you can, set the white balance to manual.

- The high contrast between brightly lit bodies and black curtains also confuses cameras. They tend to lighten the shots to compensate for the black curtains, but it means the people get over-exposed. If you've got an exposure adjustmentment override setting thing (excuse the technical jargon), take it down a notch or two.

After that it's just point and shoot.

If you have access to a tripod use it. And turn your flash off if you can. you will need to time your shot well (best just as pose is struck) as you will need to use a longer shutter speed to make up for no flash. If your camera is advanced enough use a center weighted exposure (and make sure the centre is on a body not curtain) if not use an exposure adjustment to make sure it doesn't blow out the brightness of the competitors. You are better to get a slightly dark photo than an over exposed one, as that can be corrected later. The flash on most cameras is not powerful enough to reach the stage and if it does all it does is flattens out the image destroying the effect of the stage lighting.

I have attached one I took at wellington off a tripod with no flash. Just would have been better if I had been more centre. (also taken from the back of the theatre)
