NZ Police

Alright so i've been applying for the army and have passed everything except the physical which i'm yet to sit but i haven't really had my heart into going, the only reason i wanted to go was so it would look good on my CV when i applied for the Police.

I've wanted to be in the police since i was 14 and have only ever been involved with the police when i was at a party when i was 15 and the cops told everyone to leave and nobody did so they arrested a big group of us for disorderly behavior and took us to the station then let us go, which i think shouldn't effect me when i apply. I've had security clearance for the army and have only ever in my 3 years of driving had one traffic fine which was for no safety belt and i'm now on my full licence.

So i rang the new cops number today and ask them the age and they say between 20 - 40 but they do accept younger so i said i was 18(i'm 18 next month) and they said they would accept me if i passed all the criteria and physical tests etc etc, So i'm very happy to hear this and want to pursue a career in the NZ police.

I've heard many different opinions about age from other people but not the police and some tell me it's 23 others tell me 19 so i really didn't know until today, i feel myself to be resonably mature and theres no way i'd fail anything physical and i'm not dumb so i say bring it on, anyone got any opinions on this?

Well i did nothing wrong to begin with, and i was only 15, there was about 200 teenagers at this party and some cops come and tell us to move on and nobody moved then about 1 minute later (literally), one cop comes and grabs me then pushes me into the paddy wagon. It's not like i went to court over it, i'm a very law abiding person, i've never stolen from anybody even if i saw $1 drop out of somebodys purse i would tell them they dropped it i'm that kind of person.

It's 2 years probationary officer anyway so it's not like i will be arresting mongrel mob members when i'm 18 or pulling up my 16 year old mates while they're on their learners and letting them off, i believe the law is there for a reason which is why i choose to enforce it.

Are you making a joke or being serious? one seatbelt fine in 3 years is bloody good compared to just about every teenager, i always wear my seatbelt. It was one of those times where (and everybody does this) when you get into your car and drive and then just after you've been driving a couple metres you reach over and put your belt on, thats what i was doing then got done for that.

Nah can't run that fast yet because i don't generally run like that when i go to the gym, but i will easily be able to attain that criteria with a couple weeks running.

I'm booked in for the next recruitment seminar which is October 31st and i talked to a guy this time who said 18 is fine so two cops have said that, so i'm totally happy right now.

It must be that they have a shortage on cops which is why they're leanient on age.

I heard on the radio there is a big shortage and they're even recruiting people from overseas, is this true?

Good on you mate. My previous job involved working with the cops on a regular basis, and I've got nothing but huge respect for them. They clean up the scum of society all day every day, and yet society never thanks them for it. :(

This is why there's a shortage of cops right now. And yes, I think I did hear they were trying to recruit from overseas.

Don't expect the general public to be grateful for what you'll do as a cop. Most people simply don't have a clue. But you'll make a huge difference to individuals, and they'll thank you for it.

when i was in the army i looked at joining the police apparently they only need to complete the physical if they want a pay rise??? i think.

At my peak in the army i was running 2.5km inn 8.5 minutes.

200 crunches and 65 press ups.

oddly enough the press ups are harder than anticipated because you are physically buggered after the run.

If i were you i'd join the army anyway. get to shoot rifles, good discipline, and if you get in the engineers blow stuff up :)

can you run 2.4km in 10mins 15 seconds? do 34 pushups? swim 50 metres in 54 seconds etc?

at least the pushups are easy hehe

can cops really do all that?? i've seen some very large (obese) cops that could hardly run 100 meteres

They only have to do it to get in. I dont think there is any continous ongoing physical assesment so over the years they build up on their natural stab/bullet proof vest layers around the midsection.

Was 2.4ks in 8.5 minutes much better than your peers? or is it typical for people in the army?

Well i've never really wanted to go to the army in the first place, i was only considering it until i turned old enough to join the police, i was told from alot of people you had to be like 21 - 23 so the other day i rang the new cops number and asked what i could do in the mean time until i became old enough and they said 18 is fine.

To the answer about the physical test i'm pretty sure you have to sit the test every 2 years to make sure you're maintaining a decent level of fitness.

All the best with the Police.

My good mate is considering joining Police as well.

I hear money is good too. I wanted to be in Police armed squad myself for adventure but went to Uni instead.

Ill second that mate, was really set on joining armed squad but decided to trade that for something that will give me opportunities over long time and possibly better $$.. UNI. Any one know if its possible to "part time" with the cops ?

Maybe, i've read that there are cops sworn to the crown and a few cops that aren't sworn so perhaps they work part time to some degree maybe some special trait they bring to help the police? maybe like a computer technician detecting hackers or a guns specialist? i don't know you should ring and find out.

Anyone watch Police 10 7 or Motorway patrol?

Or the best one which used to show a few years ago called City Beat, my all time favourite show

Yeah that's called Cops

It was on channel 3 i think last thursday night and it will be on this thursday night about 12:20 or something like that.

They're alot more ruthless over there......you get arrested and in jail just for slapping some chicks ass.....

you may think that sort of thing is all fun and games but there as cases where its not. a female friend of mine recently told me of an incident slightly more serious than this. i got so damn mad, if i was around when that happened that guy would think twice before doing it again.
