Come on guys, we really didn't need to turn this into a race issue. IMO taking a swipe and bringing up the cannibalism issue was a little uncalled for (that was hundreds of years ago).

How bout we accept that this is a New Zealand problem, and stop blaming particular cultures or colonisation? Making digs and blame isn't going to fix the problem.

I'm not impressed.

Vampire chick is right it shouldn't be a race issue. When something goes wrong we start looking for someone to blame instead of finding solutions to solving the problem. I agree with most people that parents need to teach their children to make right choices when it comes to food. IMO children are particpating less in physical activity in schools. The focus on education at the moment is more on the core subjects like maths, english, science and PE has taken a backseat. I remember PE being compulsory throughout college and now in some schools PE is an elective.

Part of an article from Stuff:

A gene variant that is associated with alcohol and drug addiction has also been found to increase the risk of obesity...

...found that people who inherited gene variant NRXN3, active in the central nervous system, have a 10-15 per cent greater chance of being obese.

NRXN3 is one of three obesity-related genes to be discovered, all of which are related to the brain.

Interesting that it refers to the brain and addictions yeah?

It is Maoris and Polynesians which put us near the top of the stats. If you remove them we would be way down the scale.

I totally agree with all your replies which say that it should NOT be about race and who is to blame! Instead...Lets all be more positive and look at HOW we can fix the problem!

IMHO one of the major factors is that we live in a society which says it OK for people to not take responsibility for their actions. That combined with a lot of what we call 'food' is nothing more than over processed, excessively calorific junk in ways that add no nutrition to the body.

Everybody has a decision about what they tip down their gullet and the more we breed lack of responsibility into the way our kids think, the more issues people will have for food. lets face it, in general people only think about the first 10% when they think about food. That ten percent being the portion from their mouth (taste) and thats it. Once its past the throat it then just becomes good energy or bad energy.

I get it that those people who are 500 lbs lying in bed more than likely have some unresolved pysch and food issues. But come one...3 bacon and egg breakfasts, plus 10 pints and 3 packets of chips a day etc etc...Don't have to be a nutrionist to know that theres a bunch of shit calories.

So you wanna sue McD's for a life time of eating fat saturated crap and you ended up fat....I'm sorry but those people should be suing the guys that they have on the doors that pin then down as soon as they walk in nd use those metal mouth forcing opener things...then slide those burgers and stuff end....oh shit, I forgot, that was them doing it themselves.

I'm taking my kids to Mc'Ds for dinner tonight  shove that in ya pipe and smoke it do gooders  Just taking they piss its like their fortnightly treat (every 2nd Thursday to be precise), they took carrots and apples for their treats today cut up in little pieces in little zip lock bags and seriously just as excited about that 8)

So my point is educating children, as thats where bad eating habits start
