Personally I don't find anything much too wrong with the way this site operates. Incentive schemes, rankings, rep power, karma what ever you want to call it does not really make a big difference to what people say in their posts. There has to be an element of flexibility as well. People must be allowed to have their say without fear of rejection or dismissal. However, its up to Admin & Mods to judge when & where things have got out of hand or too far off topic so as not to destroy the intent of the original post. We do not live in a perfect world so I guess its unfair of us to expect this site to be perfect. Just keep it rolling along without too many restrictions, but use good judgement where its needed to tighten things up. Just my 2c worth.

Thanks Luigi. It's a good thought. I'd been toying with a "reputation"-based system, but I hadn't got as far as the automated ban. I was concerned about people competing to get the lowest rep score (got to be careful with that reverse psychology!) but following it with an automated ban would help.

My only other concern is if this gets used on newbies asking "dumb" questions.

But of all the ideas so far, this one is probably going to be the quickest to get up and running, and it would work well with whatever else we do too. I'll start looking into it. :)

I know we talked about the reputation system some time ago and I can't remember if the forum software supported this or not.

I do support the the reputation system though it also needs to be monitored , look no further that bb.com to see that it does get abused also by cliques ganging up on members who disagree with one of them.

Jono so good to see you post here. The site has changed so much since those early days when we didn't even need any Mods ! And I still haven't caught up to your post count either!

Yeah it really has - look when i joined .. so long ago

Its good to see some of the old crowd still around - i can also see some have moved on :(

I haven't read this full thread so forgive me if the topic has changed or this has been mentioned

Don't do an annual cost for being a member, that will kill the forum. A better option would be similar to TradeMe's "address verified" thing, but have it on sign up. So a code is mailed to the users physical address which they need to enter. This would make bans actually work (as people will have limited physical addresses they can use, unlike email), and also if you have to put your real address in then people will most likely cut down on bullshit anyway

I 'liked' the original post before I realised that it was an old thread that has been resurrected, but the original post pretty much sums up my opinion right at the moment. I stick mostly to a few journals and that's it. Maybe I'm just too old, but I don't see the point of all the slagging off that goes on around here. All very schoolyard, and it's many many years since I left school, so have no time for it.

As a moderator on another large nz forum based website no related to body building at all - the most useful feature we have to get rid of twerps is checking the IP address from where the member has logged on. Recently we have had members having full conversation with two logons from the same static IP address. Very strange that someone would go to such lengths to prove a point. Needless to say their other logon was removed and publically pointed out to the masses and they looked like an egg.

Just an idea to utilised IP blocking where possible as one method to control spammers stupitity and straight out numptyness. Another method we have had success with was contacting their ISP and basically they get a letter in the mail telling them to cease and desist there stupidity or risk losing ther internet account. Sometimes hard to do but can work in extreme cases.
