Porrige/Oats vs Wheat Bix

I'm the same as darwin....I love oats..but unforunately they hate me for some reason or other. I can eat weetbix until the cows come home...but have a bowl of oats and I get kicked out of the house and sent way past the dog kennel, told to come back until the smell disappears

Rolled oats are barely processed, no artificial additives or whatever, and are low-GI, which was what got me into them even before I started training hard.

Mix them with a protein shake and let soak for a bit, then eat cold in summer, nuke for 90s or so in winter...

I have them raw in the summer with protein powder and a dash of hot water just enough to wet them. Then in the winter I cook them and add Protein powder yum! They are my favourite meal!

ditto, they are my favourite meal. im frequently heard complaining that i want some porridge haha

I just use Harraways from New World...work for me, I'm sure there's others that are just as good, but I reckon oats are like rice, there's not a lot you can do to them..... so unless you like organic, or oats-with-added-stuff, stick with the best bang for the buck...

I just got the budget stuff last week and it's yum, so I don't see any need to change.

I just have it with a scoop of vanilla protein powder the some boiling water over it, and a dash of yogurt and some cinnamon if i remember about it. I really really love it!

I read in the paper (?) recently that Harraways were the last mill producing oats in NZ and were less processed than the rest that come from Oz or further abroad.

But, i'm sure most oats are pretty much the same in terms of nutrition.

I don't touch oats or weetbix and therefore qualify as an impartial ref 8)

Oats are pretty much the biggest bang for your calorie dollar, in addition to be loaded with good fats and shitloads of nutrients like manganese and selenium, they help stabilise blood sugar and are low GI as TFB already noted.

Oats are also (fairly) unprocessed. Modern processing procedures generally lower a foods nutritional value:

"Although oats are then hulled, this process does not strip away their bran and germ allowing them to retain a concentrated source of their fiber and nutrients."
