The who you going to vote for thread!

I haven't noticed one yet but it's a pretty important event on the NZ calender so let us know: Who are you planning on voting for this Saturday?

Disclaimer: Some people seem to think that asking someone who they are going to vote for is like asking them their weight- you just don't do it. Well around these parts we ask about each others weight all the time, so if you have a problem telling others which party policies encapsulate your personal ideological beliefs can can either:

A) Let us know why you're ashamed to let your NZBB mates know what you believe in.

B) Go play with yourself!

Personally I'll be voting National, or if I have a change of mind; United Future.

As much as I think Don Brash is a muppet, and as much as I think Helen Clark is as good a leader as we could get, not to mention the thousands I'd save with an interest-free loan; I like National's policies a lot more, and think NZ needs a change.

national.

i hate how nz is becoming a welfare state with small minorities have more rights than the rest of us. i hate how criminals get a slap on the wrist.

Yes.....NZ becoming a welfare state with the lowest unemployment rate in the world.....

For some people it's a lifestyle choice if they want to be on the dole then that's their choice i means really its up to them if they want to be at home being a bum all day, it's not like they're getting a whole heap of money.

Yeah i hate how criminals get a slap on the wrist aswell, harsher penalties for certain crimes should go up reaaaly high i mean people stealing cars......i'd be gut wrenched if my car got stolen and they would most likely get away with it and even if they got caught then they would probably only get a few hours community service, i mean 10 years in prison ought to teach em for stealing, even kill them i wouldn't care what use to society are they if they're just a common petty criminal. Die bitch die

I think that if I voted for any political party currently in Parliament, I would be basically saying "Yes, I believe that because I am a white heterosexual male who didn't go to Auckland Grammar that I am just a piece of shit. Please kick me again; I like it."

Hehehe... I'm betting Libertarianz for you, Cornfed. (That, or a conscientious objector!) Am I right?!

The political leanings of bodybuilders fascinates me. As a group, bodybuilders seem to have a high proportion of right-wing (or at least right-of-centre) members. Is this because right-wingers are attracted to bodybuilding? Or because bodybuilding encourages self-reliance and therefore "converts" people to the right-hand side of the political spectrum? Chicken, or egg?

The conscinetious objector thing is right. The Libertarianz thing was in a past life. (How did you know?)

I'm gonna vote Labour, basically i dont like national because they are about helping out white middle-upper class people.

I think as a whole the average NZer loses out with national, there may be people who are dole bludgers, but there are poor people out there that are really trying but cant afford to get jobs ie, you need presentable clothes, sometimes have to travel, under Don these people would become poorer and more disadvantaged while the rich people get richer.

you realise without hardworking mainstream nz, and the "rich ppl" as you put it paying taxes, the poor would be living on the streets right ?

labor really does brain wash ppl.

think about it this way. you could give 5% tax cuts to ALL ppl. an labor would scream and yell because the rich get say 100$ more while the poor get 5$ more

do you know why??? because the rich EARN MORE thats WHY!! not because the rich are getting more tax cutt, but because they have better jobs so 5% = more money if you earn more!!

The only person I would bother voting for is Winston Peters - at least he has a personality!

I used to be a Labour girl through and through but I just don't care anymore... However I do not want to see Dr "My wife is Singaporean" Brash get in - borrowing money and potentially putting NZ in debt is not what I'd like to see!

Besides if you want welfare - go to Australia! LOL Their welfare system puts New Zealand's to shame!

I cant see how anyone wouldnt want harsher penalties for crimes

The trouble with prison is the longer someone's inside, the more likely they are to reoffend. Why? Because they forget how things work on the outside, and they find it difficult to reintegrate themselves into society. Home detention at the end of a sentence can go some way towards helping this, but it's still not great.

So what happens then? People reoffend and we cry, "They're not taking this seriously enough! We need even harsher sentences!" See the cycle?

I'm not suggesting the current system's perfect, but harsher/longer sentences aren't going to be the answer. If you start going down that path, you very quickly end up giving life sentences for minor offences. And what happens? They'll STILL reoffend.

The point is, most offenders don't stop and consider a possible sentence before committing the crime. The size of the sentence isn't going to make a difference because they simply aren't thinking about it at the time.

Isnt the whole point of having harsher sentences to try to prevent criminals from commiting the offense. I know some people who continue to do minor crime, ie theft etc, because they know if they get caught they are going to get away with a small smack on the wrist, if they knew they would definitely be looking at a long sentance then they would rethink commiting the crime.
