Cardio question on muscle burning

I've heard that when trying to build muscle, anything more than 40 mins of cardio is too much and your body starts going into that state when you burn muscle instead of fat. Two questions on that for anyone who has some knowledge on it,

1. is that true or where is the truth in it?

2. if it is so and I am playing a sport that forces me to be in that raised heartrate zone of anorobic excersize for at least 60mins, what can I do to limit the muscle burning effect? better energy source via diet maybe?

Should I just call this football season a cutting phase and use the time to lose some of this ton of body fat? Maybe get back to the serious bussiness of muscle building in the spring? :?
