Markus Ruhl has proven that smoking does not hinder bodybuilding gains if you smoke and take enough gear :-)

But it closes up capillaries and restricts blood flow which is the opposite that we want. Blood flow to muscle is important to stay anabolic and feed the muscles with lots of oxygen and nutrients. It might suppress appetite, and for the 5 mins it takes to smoke a ciggie you could have eaten 150 gms of chicken and some rice instead.

I've seen some fit smokers so it's not valid to say you can't be fit and smoke (lots of army guys smoke), but you could be fitter if you didn't smoke.

I've not heard it slows fat loss, I would think with a less fit person their heart beats faster during exercise so getting into the fat-burning zone would be easier.

It speeds up metabolism. Thats why smokers are generally slimmer and when they do quit ususally pick up a few pounds. That, and smoking supresses appetite.

I was a smoker for a long time. I have been smoke free 10 weeks this comming monday actually. I'm not going to start rambling about the benifits, just know that I maintain it was the best thing I have ever done. It is a total lifestyle change.

Lots of information about smoking and bodybuilding out there.

If anyone is interested in quiting. Do it now. Get a book called 'the easy way to stop smoking' by Allen Carr. Great method.

well done on quiting by the way, keep it up. just like weight lifting, it means nothing unless you stick at it.

If you are a smoker, would you like to stop?

like the majority of smokers, its not so easy to quit, especially with postgrad exams comming up,stres levels increase therefore number of smokes/day increases :pfft:

but i've managed to control my smoking habit down to more of a social smoker

It stuffs up your lungs.....and if your lungs don't work efficiently you heart needs to pump harder to get the oxygen around and with hardened arteries from smoking ,it cant be good for the ticker .....right?

But on the up,side new research, published in the journal Nature, scientists ran brain scans on smokers and abstainers and found that smokers had 40% less of a brain enzyme known as monoamine oxidase B, or MAO B. The enzyme breaks down dopamine, a chemical messenger in the brain associated with feelings of pleasure. Because of its exquisitely satisfying effects, says Joanna Fowler, a chemist at Brookhaven National Laboratory and one of the study's authors, "dopamine is crucially important in reinforcing and motivating behavior."

Thus smoking appears to create a self-perpetuating cycle: less MAO B leads to more dopamine, leads to more pleasure, leads to more smoking, leads to less MAO B and so on.

Scientists have not yet identified what factor in smoke lowers levels of MAO B, but Fowler speculates that it may be working synergistically with nicotine to boost dopamine levels. Earlier research showed that nicotine also increases dopamine levels by gripping like Velcro to receptors clustered in the forebrain

Mate!!!!! when you finish your exams please take some advice from a stranger and read the allan carr book "easy way to quit smoking". It reads like a piece of patronising repetition that actually got me a little frustrated first time I read it, but I swear on my kids that it's the best way to quit smoking if your thinking about it.

(btw, I read it twice because the first time I quit without fully reading it and found it really easy to quit, BIG mistake is that if your one of us lucky ones who can quit easily you also find it that much easier to start again too).

I really hope you both read it and find it as effective as I have. I just wish I had done it a damn sight sooner. I gotta go for another set of tests, biopsy this time with a great big needle straight into the lung through the chest cavity. but the doctor did say they might change their mind once they see how large a chest I have \:D/ hahaha I aint gay but I could have kissed the doctor for saying that. I though my chest was a real weak / small area but hey maybe these lumps of metal are paying off???
