More a statement rather than a question

I'm 4 weeks into this (lifting weights - feel too stink to qualify myself as doing 'bodybuilding' right now). As I am progressing I am going from lifting 'small' weights to 'still-small-but-not-as-small'. My PT (who I now only see once a month or so to stay on track) has suggested that, when my weights get slightly heavier and I need someone to spot me, to simply ask someone who's in between sets to do it.

I have problems with that because 1. I don't know how someone would feel having their workout interupted. 2. I feel embarresed asking for a spot for a 20kg bench press (when I eventually get up to that weight!).

Also, I have found the guys 100% more friendly when it comes to asking questions about my workout (and not in a poser creepy sort of way either), eg if Ive forgotten what a certain excersise is, compared to the women (at the gym, not on this site!). No idea why! I think I come across as a nice friendly sort of person, not up myself or anything, and I may not be a big strong thing like you, but come on gals, would ya stop with the looking me up and down and giving me a half assed answer! :shifty:

Re asking someone to spot you, just break the barrier and ask. You're asking for help, it shouldn't be a big deal (for them I mean). It's one of those things where once you've done it the next time is easier.

And if you find the women are more difficult to approach, then don't ask them. Ask the guys. I seriously doubt it's you that has the problem. Sad but true.

And please don't feel embarrassed. You're progressing and that's the important thing. If someone dared to hassle you about spotting whatever weight you're lifting, politely remind them that life's not a competition then ask someone else. Or tell them to get rooted :D

:ditto: just front up and ask, i hate interupting people for a spot sometimes but i'm more than prepared to help out others so i don't feel quite so bad.

i've seen heaps of guys and girls in the gym with PT's or training partners being spotted on what some may consider light weights. but at the end of the day they are working as hard as they can, so all good

It's quite simple, just find anybody standing around and say "hey mate can you come spot me on the bench? I'm just doing x amount of reps" most are more than happy, I would tend to go after people who might look like they know what they're doing.

As for guys being more helpful than women, guys are always nice to ladies, they want to get laid.

Goodluck!

errmm all the best for that lads!

Ok so the consensus is - just pick someone friendly looking and ask. That will be a good goal for when I actually reach a 20kg bench press and need spotting in the first place :pfft: grow muscles grow!!

Yep - I know my gym has a 'helpdesk' on the weights floor and those folks will spot you quite happily. But I've happily spotted anyone who'll ask...

It's also a safety thing - as SS has said, better to ask for a spot than get stapled when you can't, quite, just, lift, that, damn, bar, back, on, the, freakin, rack... or drop a db on someone.

I just want to know where you're supposed to look. I don't want to look at their face in case I laugh and it puts them off

Is checking out the overall package dodgy? :pfft:

I got asked by a guy a couple of times and well I just ended up looking at his legs :^o Honest.

haha i tend to look at the bar or the weights...and face just to see how the person is reacting you know? if they are about to fail etc...

haha classic if cheeking them out is what you want to do while spotting i think thats fine i guess everyone does it in many different senses.

Heh! Yeah we established the signals before beginning, just to be sure, cos I'm such a winner I didn't want to miss something important and leave him pinned :shifty:

He's got great legs. I love them. He thinks they're too muscled. But if he had chicken legs I wouldn't spot for him, no sir :snooty: :naughty:

Hey hey, I work out at Les Hutt City as well, been a member for 2 years now so still only a beginner, give us a pm if ya need a spot also, I usually go with my partner most mornings at 5:30am and a couple of times a week in the evening depending on social events.

hey foundation do you work nights by anychance?

Hey bro, and nup to that, Monday - Friday 7:30 - 16:30, no earlier and no later lol, done enough shift work in my time, just refuse to do it now but then you need to get yourself into the position to be able to choose I guess.

I train alone as my cuz is unreliable as a gym partner (free $ for les I guess), and my partner (the mrs) spends her time upstairs but on the odd chest workout I ask her if she can spot me every now and then.

Hows your workout coming on bro? I'm trying to break a plateau/s at the mo.

yeah i totally understand that about shift work :S not my thing anymore haha i turned into a suit and have it sorted now

man ive trained by myself for ages even when im with my gym mates alwayz doing seperate things you no?

ive always had to ask for the help instead of just having someone there to spot because they are your training buddy you know. ive had heaps of mates do it but they arnt commited and dont turn up etc which changes my work out straight away cant do full heavy stuff
