Squat Rack General Pricing

Hey

I am looking at buying a squat rack at the end of the year instead of a gym membership.

I am currently doing the 5x5 Strength programme. It is very simple and often find my self spending an entire work out in the Hammer strength Squat Rack at my Gym.

Ideally I would like the hammer strength one as it has chin/pull up handles at the top. But I have a feeling they are mainly for commercial applications and a bit out of my price range.

Can some one recommend some brands or tell me anything I should look out for when buying one. Either new or second hand. Also what price range am I looking at for a quality set up.

Will also need bench, bar and weights. But im sure I can sort that on my own.

Cheers

Warren

Elite Fitness has a couple of Nautilus-brand racks - including a power rack. Nautilus is good, but cheap - that cage is $1500

Fitness Imports also has some stuff - you could get a rack and a chin-up/ knee raise for under $700, or what looks like quite a good Power Rack in their home-use range for just over $800. They have a similar rack in their commercial range, which has chin-up bars, but don't quote a price.

check out getstrength.com and of course you may get lucky on trademe. 5x5 is great.

you wont get something awesome for very cheap.. and of course there are some great benefits to joining a gym like spotters and all the other random machines that you don't use frequently...

also the cost of a decent set of bars and plates is gonna cost you a bomb

This one on trademe is going pretty cheap. What are your thoughts on that? Wont actually use it untill next year. But I dont know whether one like that will come again. Maybe I should just wait.

Yea 5x5 has been great. What makes a set of bars and weights decent? The only brand I know is Olympic.

You are right about the spotters. But will most likely be training with a friend. So not a big deal.
