STRENGTH

what about the frumpy housewife that lifts the burning car up cos her child is trapped underneath it?? a rush of adrenalin can be pretty powerful. heaps of cases around the world where people have performed feats of strength in extraordinary situations.

Hmmm good point, dunno if it was directed at my post or not, but in my mind that's different again, and not what I was getting at.

I was working on the basis that the someone displaying strength is trained, but perhaps not with the aim of competing for WSM.

Cos as you say, emergency situations and adrenaline etc can turn people into The Hulk.

Would a trained person become a stronger Hulk than the frumpy housewife in an emergency situation? Or would other factors negate the training differential?

good point, whole new discussion topic just there.

Additional mass over the housewife should provide additional emergency strength. This is on the basis that the cns is overriden and maximal recruitment is possible. The theory behind this is the golgi tendon body limits maximal strength to prevent injury except in rare situations of extreme desperation.

But then theres how many urban legends of extreme strength.

There are a few techniques for lifting supramaximal loads by a few percent, none of them would be handy in a powerlifting competition though.

How i understand it if you have the same composition and number of fibres then the efficiency gained by training would be negated in a golgi supression instance.

gotta stick up for the housewives here, I just had to hold onto my 5 month old while waiting for my 6 year old name to be called out for his prize giving. 20mins of standing there holding the baby with one arm killed my arm. the wife can and does do the same for twice as long and with no arm changing like I resorted to  it didn't go unnoticed by here either. She got quite a good run of jokes out at me on the way home about it

That really is a good question. Obviously subjective, although we all know strength when we set it. Many variables to consider. Strong, compared to what?

I have one specific question of 'strength', how many people have seen people strictly overhead press (seated) 100 plus kilos and if so, what were the lifters like? I have only seen it three times and all three times it was by guys on the juice.

Is pressing (seated) overhead press 100 kilos plus, "strong". By the way 100 kilos plus I mean an olympic bar but two twenties on each end. Also can anyone can press that weight and if so, what are your 'stats' i.e. 17, 32 years old thick boned, training experience etc?

Thanks.

Arthur Saxon was one the world's all time strongest men. At only 5'10, 204 pounds:

- He Bent Pressed (a one handed barbell lift from the ground to overhead) 370 pounds.

- Did a Two Hands Anyhow lift of 448 pounds. i.e. Bent Pressing a 336 pound barbell with his right hand, and then pressing overhead a 112 pound kettlebell with his left, in the same movement.

- He lifted a 110 pound Kettlebell to his shoulder, holding it there with his little finger. He then had a 160 pound man climb on to his back and sit on top of the Kettlebell. He then Bent Pressed the total weight of 270 pounds.

- With his two brothers (the Saxon Trio): supported a bridge, a speeding car and six men, weighing 8000 pounds all up!

One thing I find about my strength is its inconsistency. Sure I'm increasing all the time, kg by kg, but then some days I feel flat and can't push sh!t and then the next week I feel like Arnie and push sh1t loads.

it all depends on your rest and recovery between each workout I know wea ur coming from and now since I dont train like I use to i continually get stronger every week with some rediculus gains I love it but remember that its ur C.N.S that sends the signal to get the muscles contracting and that can take 7-10 days to fully recover if ur training hard enuf most people go by muscle soreness to gauge how much they have recoverd but it all starts in your brain
