What do you think of the smaller fellas?

Recommended Posts

I've had many conversations with people about "the huge dude at my gym", even read a topic on here discussing whether they are an inspiration or just make you feel inferior.

What I'm interested in is what the big dudes think of us.

So, all you seasoned bodybuilders, what's your impression of the beginners?

Do we annoy you by hogging the dumbells you were gonna curl when we're doing our shrugs? And despite us trying to be discrete, do you catch us staring? (and do you like that or is it just creepy?)

Also, any general pearls of wisdom for those who want to look like you one day would be cool.

First reaction: if the "smaller fella" is apparently a beginner who's trying hard, I guess I think "everyone's gotta start somewhere".

But then I'm not a seasoned bb'er.... and as for other pearls of wisdom... "Start somewhere, and don't stop".

Good question.

I'm still a small dude in my mind having lived longer at less that 70kg and hardly anytime at over 110kg.

I avoid eye-contact with others in the gym mostly but I can tell when someone's checking me out. I can also tell when I'm moving some heavy weights that people want to stop and watch...I'm cool with that too.

No I don't mind if anyone takes dumbbells, size doesn't matter and we are all in the gym for different reasons. Big guys shouldn't rule the gym floor so-to-speak as the gym is full of different sport-minded people doing their own thing, some things are far more important than what I am doing to be humble about it...but likewise if I have hold of the weights...they're mine :-)

Pearl of wisdom:

I do prefer to just put my head down and train, I'm there for a good time not a long time.

Ehh I don't really count as big although I get the occasional "Do you take anything" and "Nice lift" comments. Pisses people of though when I tell them I stay lean year long eating large amounts of everything and anything I want. The joke will be on me though when I die from clogged arteries :pfft:

Yea if a person is consistent and trains hard thats really all that matters. Too many people give up though cause for the majority of people getting anywhere at the gym takes ages even if you do everything right.

We all started somewhere and I have always offered help and advice when asked no matter how big/small the individual(s) is. Im also a true believer in ensuring that gym users lift with good form, get the technique right the first time before trying to add the weight on the bar.

Anyone training around me is a blur .... I am generally focused internally - but make a point of being courteous. The smaller and younger guys normally size me up - which is fine but I shut it out mainly and I'm more interested in what my next set is going to look like.

Agreed. People dont appreciate how long it can take to look the way that you do and it pisses me off when people assume I take steroids.

I dont mind people asking me the odd question and I will only ever step in if someone is doing something that is likely to truly hurt themselves (and they dont know any better) because if I corrected people at my gym I would be there all day....

When people keep interrupting my training and slowing me down....when Ive been there all day training clients anyway, that is when I get a little dark

I respect beginners who train hard with proper form and are keen to learn. :D

That's spot on, we all started small(er) and I remember feeling like an idiot in front of the big boys when I first started. I made it a point that if I was gonna get in the way, I'd put the effort in!

I will only get mad with a smaller guy if he is wasting time with poor form and minimal effort when someone else could be getting results out of the same weights/machine/station.

Android....I'm sorry if I stare- glad it doesn't bother you, can I bring a video camera next time? 8)

When I get big, I'll have the courage to come up and talk to you.

best comment ever!!!!!!!!!!!

If your working hard and doing it right, I've got nothing but respect for you.

I find the drive and desire of novices inspiring, personally I've always prefered to train with them as it helps me.

I quite like smaller/beginner guys asking me for opinions and help with form, what to eat, how to train, etc... and when I see someone doing an exercise very badly, I do go over and correct them (standing barbell curl is a classic - someones gonna break a back swinging it around like that!) As for people getting in the way - I am patient, I can wait - can always move onto something else anyway. But with the new circuit training I am doing, no one gets in the way and I never have to wait! :)

No means No Mike, the constant PMs, asking me to train with you, carry my water bottle and towel for me, have your babies....it's all getting too much look, NO means NO.

Sad really you had potential too :^o
