Anti - Inflamme and muscle grow?

Stuntleader

Hey, good question. I don't know the answer, so I'm going to have a guess until someone cleverer comes along.

My guess is that although it's probably not significant, it will have a negative impact on muscle growth. I think the inflammation would trigger your body to repair itself, which it does by building the muscle bigger and stronger than before. Less inflammation = less repairing = less growth. Maybe. :P

thanks! i think you do make a good point, so we just need to be tough and handle the pain lol

Yeah, but I don't think you need to be too staunch. Like I say, I imagine any difference (either for or against muscle growth) would be pretty minimal, so if you need an antiflam, you might as well use it.

A few too many stunt falls, is it?! :D

Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Many steroids, specifically glucocorticoids, reduce inflammation or swelling by binding to cortisol receptors. These drugs are often referred to as corticosteroids.

[edit] Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), alleviate pain by counteracting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme. On its own COX enzyme synthesizes prostaglandins, creating inflammation. In whole the NSAIDs prevent the prostaglandins from ever being synthesized, reducing or eliminating the pain.

Typical undesired effects of glucocorticoids present quite uniformly as drug-induced Cushing's syndrome. Typical mineralocorticoid side effects are hypertension (abnormally high blood pressure), hypokalemia (low potassium levels in the blood), hypernatremia (high sodium levels in the blood) without causing peripheral edema, metabolic alkalosis and connective tissue weakness (Werner, 2005).
Function

There are currently nine known prostaglandin receptors on various cell types. Prostaglandins ligate a sub-family of cell surface seven-transmembrane receptors, G-protein-coupled receptors. These receptors are termed DP1-2, EP1-4, FP, Ip, and TP, corresponding to the receptor that ligates the corresponding prostaglandin (e.g., DP1-2 receptors bind to PGD2).

The diversity of receptors means that prostaglandins act on an array of cells and have a wide variety of effects:

* cause constriction or dilation in vascular smooth muscle cells

* cause aggregation or disaggregation of platelets

* sensitize spinal neurons to pain

* decrease intraocular pressure

* regulate inflammatory mediation

* regulate calcium movement

* control hormone regulation

* control cell growth

These are important bits i have pulled from the article. Sorry, but i don't have heapps of time at the moment, so i can't give you more, or comment on how accurate it is, due to it coming from wikipedia.

Anti-inflammatory foods

Due to concerns over the gastric problems caused by NSAIDs researchers are turning to more natural solutions to dealing with the problem of inflammation. One ingredient with a great future potential is capsaicin, the chemical in chili peppers that gives them their spiciness. Studies have shown some success in the control of pain and inflammation when capsaicin is applied topically.[citation needed]

Others advocate the consumption of anti-inflammatory foods as a means of controlling inflammation. Anti-inflammatory foods include most colorful fruits and vegetables, oily fish and certain nuts, seeds, herbs and spices such as ginger. Those following an anti-inflammatory diet will avoid refined oils and sugars, and show a preference for anti-inflammatory foods in their meal choices.[11] Tobacco may have some anti-inflammatory effects, see Smoker’s Paradox. In some conditions, dietary omega-3 fatty acids lower inflammation, see Essential fatty acid interactions.
