WPC/WPI question

GHOSTN

hi guys

for the last few years i have been buying only whey protein isolate as i was told it was the best more pure etc, its getting dam expensive and im back studying so dont have money coming in so have to watch it..

my question is what is the real benifit of using wpi instead of wpc?

its so much cheaper to use wpc and its all protein isnt it? im still guna grow just as good? maybe slightly bigger serves due to the fact its not as protein rich as wpi but yea..

have just ordered some mutant mass as im bulking, but i do want to get some wpc from eatme once i hear from you guys

most people on hear seem to be using wpc so i dont see why i need to bother with wpi

looking for someone with a fair bit of knowledge to let me know their thoughts?

I can't really advise you on the nutritional aspects of it, other then to say it isn't as important as some of the supplements make it out to be. One major factor that many people consider is taste, and after drinking mutant mass, it may be difficult going back to a WPI... Flex made a good post on this recently, you could look through his old posts and see if you can find it.... cant remember what thread, sorry...

EDIT: viewtopic.php?p=110326#p110326

decided to be less lazy. And remembered what to search for...

WPI, WPC, Casein etc are all protein with the major (but not only) differences being the time it takes to digest and absorb the protein into the body, and the amount of protein in a single serve (if all serves are the same size).

WPI is only good if you need protein NOW. It's in the bloodstream the quickest and being used. First thing in the morning and straight after a workout is ideal for WPI. Or you are out somewhere and 3 hours after your last protein meal you need protein like...NOW.

What I would say about WPI....

There are 2 types of WPI, one has higher % protein and it's from trickery imho, like melamine was but without the adverse side effects. Ion-exchange WPI is crap, heat treated milk powder that has lost most of its bio-availability (but has increased its protein content).

I wouldn't feed it to my cat (If I ever have one). Micro-filtered WPI is the only way to go and yes it's not as cheap as Ion-exchange WPI.

My 1st choice is Scivation Whey, it's a WPC

WPC is better than WPI to my body (you have to look past the purity and amount of protein per gms serve).

WPI absorbs so much faster you're soon lacking aminos in your blood stream again shortly afterwards. Therefore your 'muscle building state' lasts longer with WPC.

personally i dont think there is a lot in it

WPC gives me room clearing gas, for no other reason i choose other forms

as for fast v slow protein, its majoring in the minors compared to getting enough total calories and protein than the particular rate of absorbtion

in fact, i take micelliar? casin before workouts even, i live THAT dangerously........just take it 45min rather than 30min before

I would use both.

Like Android has said .... WPI is best first thing in the morning and straight after a workout. I prefer to use WPI in water and take a fast carb straight after training. For the remainder of the day I'm using a WPC product as it breaks down slower in your system. (Still with water - or sometimes orange juice)

On taste: Generaly speaking if a powder says choc on the label. If you mix it in water and it tastes like choclate ... chances are there are some hidden sugars in there. (Dymatize I am a bit suspect on and EAS Whey - although I do know a number of trainers that use these products with success) A good powder should taste like its be filtered through a cardboard box.

The key things you should be focused on is how well the powder mixes in a shaker .... as I have stated previously "I'd eat a pc of wood and drink 1L water every meal if it gave me the result I was looking for" ... So as long as it goes down easy I don't really care provided it does the job.

The highest grade WPI I have found in NZ is Horleys ICE. test at 91.8% protein. It is pricey but I guess you need to weigh that up. As a secondary powder I quite like PVL Whey maxx, but it tastes a little too good to be true. (The NZ supplier swears it's pure so I have to take it at face value) + I had my best year of training on it in 2007.

Finally, I prefer to use low carb powders because you can add real food to the mix - that way you have more control over what is going into your body. Whilst mutant mass has some impressive stats, if you run over you caloric load for the day you'll gain negative weight.

I'm keen to have a go with Scivation --- where do you get this from?

It seems a little crazy that people continually comment on being poor & not being able to afford protein, then look to buy small volumes of labelled protein at retail prices.

FFS guys we live in NZL, Fonterra crank out WPC & WPI at dirt cheap prices. I just got 40kg of WPC (Alacen 450) for $840 and $60 of that was freight out of Auckland. If you're in Auckland thats $19.50 / kilo.

Did you get that from Davis trading, or who?

Not this time, although I have in the past. Prod010 on here can get them.

Ok. how does it mix?

And do you mind the taste/ do you add something in?

Mixes find in water or milk (I only ever use a cheap shaker bottle not a blender).

Taste is neutral so no issues there - just tastes like less sweeter milk. Can be a bit average in water - but I guess you could add falvour in that case (I dont bother).

The next best option (IMHO) if you don't like flavourless protein (and you happen to live in or around CHCH) is to get the High Performance Health product. Good clean tasting flavours (Choc, Vanilla, Berry), with no added BS that inflates the price!

i have been using unflavoured bulk wpi..

i dont think buying from fonterra is exactly easy for most of us and im not buying 40kg at once

I got a bunch of guys in the gym that couldn't afford it either - chipped in with most taking 5-10kg.

Ok. how does it mix?

And do you mind the taste/ do you add something in?

I purchased a 20kg WPC bag from davis trading for $285! The guy said it was a special price and id never get that price again

Anyway Mixes very well in a shaker bottle. Never had clumps

Tastes like crap in milk and even worse in water. Small price to pay for a big saving in powder.

Hey Ghostn,

Well here's the gospel on WPC/WPI.

The difference between the 2 is that WPC (80% protein) contains more fat and lactose, minerals than WPI (Microfiltered,90% protein). This is manipulated through processing conditions that dont effect the protein itself. So if you don't mind ingesting a powder that is 80% protein,12%fat and 5% lactose (amounts are off the top of my head and close enough to accurate) then go for it. Thats it put simply. You can always slow down the digestion of the WPI with some flax oil.

WPI just has the lactose and fat removed. Ion exchange is another deal and I dont have too much knowledge on that processing.

Some WPI's are instantised. Without they are difficult to mix. WPC has the fat in it which acts like an emulsifier.

To my knowledge the difference between Ion exchange and Microfiltered are negligible but more research is needed on my part.
