Parent's weren't the happiest with that decision. Oh well :shifty: Currently studying the weirdest BA double major. I'm not going to say, it'll just get people laughing at me.

I feel for ya. If it weren't for my parents 'influence', well... lets just say i wouldn't be avoiding listening to a pointless lecture right now. I regret allowing them to have that infleunce now.

Please don't make us guess your major, it can't be that bad. :)

Gender studies and Philosophy.... History and Linguistics...Chinese and Maori....Sociology and Music?....

Hopefully criminal law. Its the only law that makes sense to me. All the rest is mainly dry commercial crap.

I suppose you have to start as a defense lawyer? Or can you apply to be a prosecution lawyer if you wanted? I know which I would prefer to do ;)

From what i've been told, ya pretty much have to start off as a Duty Solictor (i.e the lawyer at the court with crap pay and long hrs providing advice to those who have been charged) Then after gaining experience you could get a job with a firm who does criminal law or go on to become a district prosecutor, or.... *cough* ....a legal aid lawyer.

Normally defence lawyers have been prosecutors for quite some time first, otherwise you just plain suck.

Anyway, this is a little off topic lol sorry, ill shutup now.

In this job market you're gonna need some serious hours as a volunteer with a community law centre and some serious intern experience before you even get near a Duty Solicitor role.

Yeah i've heard that. Although internships are incredibly hard to come by now as all the major firms are reducing their positions, and the community law centre here already has sufficient volunteers, last time i checked.

I knew of a few grads who pretty much just walked into a Duty Solictors role a couple of years ago, after the course, but yeah, times have certainly changed. :?

Hopefully by the time i'll be looking for a job the recession will have eased somewhat..

You sure can ride out the recession from the uni.

The make or break for first time interview short lists is often who you had your summer jobs with, your experience and how you sell yourself.

Another option is to sign up as a research assistant for a post grad if they are tied to a corporate scholarship. It's a cunning way to get a foot in the door with big outfits.

Wow thats a great idea. I'll have to look into that, as i truly don't see there being any other option really in terms of gaining experience. I'm guessing ur a practicing lawyer orange?

It was a pointless thread anyway, at least now it is vaguely interesting :).

Lol didn't think anyone would give a damn about my law quandary, but okay then, glad i'm not boring ya. :D
